Thanks Colombia for a memorable trip!

I didn't get to write up about how my weeks 3-5 went but I will summarize how I felt about staying there. I loved the food (gained 12 lbs and now can't fit into the tightest jeans I've ever bought-what was I thinking?! BTW, I only mentioned this first only b/c really, all I did was eat and drink!)

I love the families and friends that accommodated me in Mosquera. I preferred staying there than in Santa Barbara and north area of the city. The people of Mosquera, Madrid, Facatativa are such party animals and down to earth! I loved and miss the house parties so much!

I miss waking up to the dogs' barking, the men driving around the block, shouting thru the megaphone, selling food and I'm running out in my pajamas yelling, "Espera! Espera!" And I miss selling ice cream to the kids. Oh and how can I forget the cute boys playing soccer!

I miss dancing with anyone whenever there was music on. I learned one particular dance when I dined at Andres Carne de Res (in Chia) and it's similar to the "Electric Boogie". I have the song but I can't remember the dance routine! Can anyone post a video of this dance?!

To Angela, Tia Fabiola, Luis Alberto, Paola y Marcella (my fav paisas pals!), Stella, Marella y Jairo Humberto: Thank you for all your love and kindness. One day I hope to return the hospitality and generosity.

I'm glad you enjoyed your trip! I hope you'll tell your skeptical friends about what a great time you had in Colombia and how the country really is. Hope you'll visit again soon!!

gained weight? Glad you enjoyed Colombia. I would always loose weight when I came to visit. Mosquera - interesting - my wife does not like the place to live - so where were you in the town? When I pass through I see mostly just factories. I guess every visitor has to go to Carne de Res, but I hope you also got to enjoy some of the small nice restaurants.

So, when are you coming back?

My question also about the weight gain. When I visit Colombia, I lose weight. My first trip, which was only for 10 days, I lost 10 lbs. My second trip, I lived in Colombia for 4 months. I lost another 5 lbs or so. And I ate more than here in the US. Must be a combination of better food, altitude, and excersize. Anyway, you are the first person I can remember ever reporting a weight gain from visiting Colombia. For me, pre-Colombia was 173 lbs. I am now maintaining (trying to) about 158 lbs ... according to the giant scale at the entrance of Publix.

Yes, I really am a happy traveller...so happy that I felt too guarded at times which may explain my getting run over by a motorcyclist and getting robbed! ("I told you so!")

I won't be returning until X'mas '08 unfortunately. But my friend whom I stayed with in Mosq. will be here in Vancouver at the end of the month for 1 year (doing that in/out routine while waiting for her immigration papers to process). So I won't be "homesick" too much.

JM, I don't exactly know where in Mosq. I stayed in. Too bad we didn't get ahold of each other while I was there. Apparently, I didn't visit most of the "tourist locales". Maybe next time I will so I can say, "I've been there; done that."

Simon, I've been advocating for Colombia whenever I'm asked about my experiences. I know some people here have expressed their sentiments about too many extranjeros visiting Colombia. All I can say to all my fellow travellers is that when you do go there, "Soak it all in; don't complain and bring back nothing but the love of the good people. And if you don't gain weight, you're not loved enough!...hehe)

Robert Jorge I think I have read one or two threads where you expressed that you like the food there. I believe you said you live in Villavicencio, home of Carne a la Mamona, boy do I like carne asada.

I would bet that if you would eat the three meals every day that they are used to serving in Colombia and each lunch and diner is made up of the main meal, soup, salad, a fruit juice, sometime a postre and the snacks in between the meals, you will gain weight!!

Monpirri, you are addressing the right person. Yep, my 2nd favorite place to eat was on the outskirts of Villavo, near the roundabout, near the entrance to the 7th Brigade. Just a tin roofed pavilion with heavily smoked carne de llano being served with yucca and potatoes. 9 mil for like 2 lbs of beef. My favorite place to eat in Villavo was on Calle 15, one block north of the Etell office. 2.5 mil for the best sopa de mondongo. The chicken there was incredible too. Anyway, I kept the weight off because we walked miles everyday in combination with constant, tropical heat.
