Crime getting so bad in SOFLA now people are being shot up at Dunking donuts for not getting on the floor fast enough. And robbers very brazen even shooting and killing an armed guard inside of Dadeland mall. That's ridiculous!

Why did they leave off 'Detroit', y Nueva Orleans?

goin_south,

I'm curious why you mention those two US cities. Could you elaborate?

goin_south says on Dec 3, 2008, 15:58:

I think, most usually, they are at the top of the list for crime in the usa... recentemente.
No?

Tolú says on Dec 3, 2008, 16:07:

Oh, I see. I don't find the crime in those cities to be comparable to the places on that list though...

That's a pretty crap list. Where is Somalia?

It's run by warlords and pirates attack cruise and cargo ships off its coast.

cocoloco says on Dec 3, 2008, 18:41:

Where in that list is the USA? I have been to the poorest sections in Medellin and Bogota, and it does not come close to the ghettos in Miami, NY, LA, Chicago, nor does Colombia have radical Muslims and North Koreans plotting to wipe them off the face of the earth. I feel a lot safer in Colombia than in the US.

manINred says on Dec 3, 2008, 20:04:

Poor doesn't necessarily = dangerous. No one on this website would venture into the most dangerous parts of Medellin or Bogota.

The USA as a whole does not deserve to make that list, but Detroit as a city centre does. I don't see how Zimbabwe and the Congo are safer than Colombia, but then again I don't see how Thailand is more dangerous either.

Anyway, these lists are meant to be taken with a grain of salt.

But, how would you know?

lpdiver says on Dec 3, 2008, 22:03:

The thing about these "dangerous" countries is that you need to analyze the cause and effect. Is the country in an active war? Well DUH yah it IS going to be pretty dangerous.

After that it comes down to life style and economics.

Poor areas are going to be more dangerous generally speaking.

Chasing whores and drugs...you know buddy? you are hanging out in risky locales and dealing with risky people.

Stealing local women...good way to find pain.

Some places are just bad locales and lawless in general...Can you spell Darien Gap or Nariño department?

Avoid these and you can pretty much narrow it down to when your number is up...

kramer says on Dec 4, 2008, 09:35:

Well, I live part-time in Thailand and part-time in Colombia, so perhaps I should comment (I am currently living in northern Thailand this autumn and winter). We laughed here in Thailand when this list came out. The actual danger in Thailand was not the present conditions, but there was a small possibility that they could spiral out of control which could possibly create the conditions for a spurt of crime. The crisis is mostly over for now.

However, even a worst case scenario was probably more of an interruption of services rather than widespread violence. Generally, Thailand is safer than a Western country and certainly safer than Colombia. However, when I first saw this list, I sent mail to my some colombian friends and commented that I never thought I would be running to the safety of Colombia, ja ja.

Also, I continue to feel that the safety level of Colombia is colored by its recent history and less attention is paid to improved travel conditions nowadays because they can't get past the reputation and are simply unaware or unwilling to acknowledge the fact that the country has really changed for the better. Also, a previous poster had a good point that Venezuela not being on the list greatly subtracts from the credibility of the list.

To be fair though Bogota does have a LOT of theft of all kinds. A LOT. Not necessarily violent robberies, but a lot of home break ins, con artists, pickpocketing etc. Murder rate doesn't really indicate security.

La_Huella says on Dec 5, 2008, 08:53:

Why not post Lima vs Bogota, they have very similar populations.

La_Huella says on Dec 5, 2008, 09:07:

Nope. Bogota has about half that. Look it up.

Most of Colombia has higher crime than Bogota, ESPECIALLY murders. Usually Pereira or Villavicencio lead the republic in murders.

La_Huella says on Dec 5, 2008, 10:02:

I don't think Lima is any safer than Bogota, unfortunately I can't find any good data right now.

It would be interesting to know the details behind the murders. Gang on gang, drug related, crime of passion, etc. I still maintian that if you stay out of the wrong places and keep your nose clean that those numbers become virtually irrelevant.

I would go anywhere in Los Angeles during the DAY but once the sun sets you had better know where you are. I think it is fair to say that there are good parts of town and bad parts of town in just about every country. I know that 15 years ago San Jose, Costa Rica was safe just about all 24 hours long but that has changed I understand.

If there was no crime there would be no police or even military. Most everybody has them right?
