Tequila health benefits

As a psych. major, I know I will be pummeled with accusations of rationalization but I have been reading, and hearing, even on National Public Radio, of the health benefits of drinking tequila each day. Supposedly, studies show that it is good for the heart, digestive system, etc.. Only in moderation, unfortunately, but even still, that could be good news. Anybody have any personal thoughts on this? Is tequila, in moderation, actually a good thing. Personally, if I drink too much of it, I become fearless, which aint usually good.

Man Tequila says on Sep 10, 2007, 21:06:

You can graph alcohol consumption and age of death and get a J-shaped curve. People who drink one drink of alcohol (a drink is 12 oz. of beer, 4 oz. of wine or 1.5 oz of tequila) a day are at the bottom of the J, having a lower mortality than those who drink no alcohol. People who drink three or more drinks a day have considerably higher mortality (die sooner) than people who drink less.

Heart disease kills more than 1/3 of people, and drinking alcohol reduces atherosclerosis. It increases good HDL cholesterol and reduces kidney stone attacks. Drinking too much causes stroke, liver disease, pancreatitis, disfigured babies and the fall of the Roman Empire.

So one drink of tequila a day would probably help.

The general benefits of alcohol apply to tequila. Agave has some purported benefits since it is high in fructans, but these benefits are lost when agave is distilled. Nothing special about it that I've read in the medical literature.

I like tequila, but when I drink it rarely stick to two shots. One shot a day seems to be the best for living a long life, but make sure it's worth living. Having a good social network is also associated with longer life and greater satisfaction, maybe people who drink are more social too? Tequila is medically known for being delicious. It seems to make things worse for diabetics. Medical research into tequila is sorely lacking.

Why is wine another story? Some industries are better than others at marketing benefits, but it doesn't make it so. See this American Heart Association article:
http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4422

"No direct comparison trials have been done to determine the specific effect of wine or other alcohol on the risk of developing heart disease or stroke.

Research is being done to find out what the apparent benefits of drinking wine or alcohol in some populations may be due to, including the role of antioxidants, an increase in HDL ("good") cholesterol or anti-clotting properties. Clinical trials of other antioxidants such as vitamin E have not shown any cardio-protective effect. Also, even if they were protective, antioxidants can be obtained from many fruits and vegetables, including red grape juice.

The best-known effect of alcohol is a small increase in HDL cholesterol."

I think anything that releases resistance, emotionally, is valuable, healthwise, and if tequila is particularly strong in that respect, as long as one does not tend to overdo it, then I believe it can be beneficial.

Man Tequila says on Sep 10, 2007, 22:35:

But if the benefit was due to antioxidants and flavanoids, and not alcohol, fruit consumption would also show mortality curve benefits in heart disease. Vitamin E was touted by cardiologists for its antioxidant effect, but no benefit was shown by the HOPE trial.

Double blind studies are limited but the only way to show complex physiological cause and effect. You just can't do that with a prospective or case-control trial.

but if those double blind studies were to be valid, they would have to rule out particular individuals having very different responses, which is always the case. I say, generally speaking, therefore, throw the baby out with the bath water. unless one is in public health, and wants to only show general tendencies. Individual responses always vary, extremely, and it is almost dangerous to think of how these studies might adveresely affect individuals, only because of that entire mind over matter factor.

ok here are my thoughts...

tequila is indeed good for digestive system, in Mexico, mexicans do drink a little when having indigestion, so if you feel kind of bad for so much food you ate, you drink a "caballito", and IT WORKS!!!!! I have tried that myself....

On the other hand, whenever I have the flu, I drink a cup of coffee with a shot of tequila, that is called "café con piquete"... and it works!!! or at least I forget about the flu.... hehehehehehehe =P

I always laugh at a lot of these so called health studies. As George Burns quipped one day before he died(being close to 100 when he passed) when asked what his Doctors think of Him Smoking 5-6 Big Cigars daily as well as Drinking Alcohol Daily, He answered "I don't know, they(my doctors) are all Dead" LOL,,,Moral of the study, take those Studies with a grain of salt,,,Seems they are like Opinions, everyone(depending on the Industry) Everyone has one,,,

There are lots of good studies, and a good double-blind reduces inclusion bias by putting enough people with similar lifestyles into each group through proper randomization. Studies are far from perfect, but even the good ones are quickly blown out of proportion by a media more interested in saying whether popular food X is "good" or "bad" rather than a nuanced view of the physiology. Most folks don't have the training in statistics or medicine to tell a good study from a bad one anyway.
