going well! kim

i´m in colombia now and everything is going great! spent this past weekend in cartagena. what a beautiful city!! colombia is not at all what i expected. i don´t feel any more worried here than i would in any big city in the world. my boyfriend´s family has been great, and he and i are getting along amazingly! i´ve been here only about a week, but so far i can´t complain about anything!! wish i did speak spanish though it hasn´t been too much of a problem. i went to the gold museum last week with my boyfriend´s father (who speaks a little english), we were walking about and some school kids heard us speaking in english so suddenly they started saying ´hello´ and ´yes´. hee hee....it was cute...this gringa is enjoying colombia a lot!

thanks so much for asking kim that is sweet of you!!!

update... well what can i say....i fall in love more with colombia as i fall in love more with my boyfriend and his family....the fact that he is going to leave both this amazing country and his unique and spectacular family for me in a few months just touches my heart in an undescribable way.

i was surprised again this past weekend with a trip to zona cafeteria (the trip to cartagena was also a surprise). we went via bus so i could get a good look at the countryside. i must admit i was initially a little nervous about travelling into the heart of the country this way, but i must say that once i was on the road i felt totally safe. there are police everywhere and we didn´t take the road that usually has problems with the guerrilla.

we stayed at a lovely finca (san diego....funny aside about our room here....the sink and the toilet were one. i mean that the tank of the toilet was where the water from the sink flowed into...so you brushed your teeth into a toilet...a strange experience) and visited the panaca park (where i learned to milk a cow! poor cows....it does feel a bit rude to tug on their bits so ungracefully...but they are so patient with everyone) and parque national del cafe. both were really nice. we took a funny picture in the parque national del cafe dressed in traditional outfits. when we were walking from where they take the photos back to where you change we were even stopped by other tourists to take picts with us! it was rather funny. i guess even a gringa can look colombian when they stick us in traditional gear and cover the light hair with a scarf :-) it was so nice to be out of the city and to see the countryside. we stopped in a couple of towns along the route as well, and i wish i could remember the names to tell you where. there was one on the way back where there was lots of handicrafts to buy and a cute town square. we had the best food at a restaurant there. grilled fish and patacons....it was one of the best meals i´ve had since i´ve been here (mind you i don´t eat red meat or pork so there is a limited menu for me generally anyway). the town itself felt a bit like a hippy commune....there was definately a lot of marijuana floating around. but i have to say i didn´t see anything openly, but you could just tell.

now i´m back in bogota and trying not to freeze since the weather here is so different from zona cafeteria (and i come from a really hot place so i kind of thrive on warm weather!). don´t know where i am off to next, although i think this weekend i am staying in town to sample some of the bogota nightlife. oh...and last week i also went to the salt cathedral. i must admit i was a little disappointed. it was nice, but not as spectacular as i had been led to believe. still it is something you must see.

so that´s it from me for now. thanks for your interest in my journey....i´ll try to post some picts when i can so you can see some of the places i´ve been....

cheers

Sounds great Sounds like your having such a great experience. I'm leaving tomorrow on my way to Colombia to visit my girlfriend in Bogota. I love that city and hope to visit some of the others. I prefer the warmer weather too but the weather in Bogota is great considering it's in the tropics and you still need a light jacket. Unlike being in North Carolina where I live that's HOT right now.
Take care
Daniel
