Telenovela/Psychology: Why did Colombians like to see el Cachaco suffer so much?

In the classic el Cachaco y la Costeña, Antonio would every week be insulted, conspired against, humiliated, threatened, beaten, and sometimes even sequestrado. It usually reached a point that made me turn off the set or at least change channels because my tolerance for seeing another person suffer was surpassed. My friends Colombianos and, especially Colombianas, not only were untroubled by the abuse, but thoroughly enjoyed it. Who can explain why a Colombiana enjoys brutality that an Ajena would not be willing to see?
Perhaps a little harmless pop psychology will do no harm on a fine mid summer weekend.
