My Colombian wife and I plan to move to Colombia for a year or so. My U.S. employer gave me the option to telecommute from there. I'd live in Colombia and from my wife's house, do computer work over the internet for this U.S. company. What legal and financial issues should I consider, and which agency should I talk to, if I want to know the definitive rules on working abroad? Thanks.

chrispej says on Nov 29, 2005, 07:25: Not tax free You can check the IRS web site but if I remember right, you must work in a foreign country for a foriegn company. You must reside in that country for the entire year except for 5 or 10 days. I forget which. With those requirements, you can earn up to 80,000 US tax free.

Mr. Hollywood says on Nov 30, 2005, 19:08: The tax skinny You should definately do your own due dilligence about the tax issues. Read IRS form 2555 which defines what you can and can't do. I also recommend you get a good tax person because there are a lot of variables that come into play.
