TEFL in Colombia
Heya,
Wondering if anyone has taken the Cactus TEFL course in Bogota or any other TEFL courses in S.A. and what you thought about it. I've been tutoring ESL students for the past several years and am interested in working in Colombia. I'm curious to hear of anyone's experiences searching for work as an English teacher, too.
Cheers!

Are you certified? If you are a certified teacher you have many, many options open to you. If not, things are slightly more difficult. Language institutes are probably the best way to go if you have no certification.

TEFL Courses Hi Banzista
You need to be quite careful if you are looking for a TEFL course. There are a lot about but very few of them have much recognition though they make lots of claims and frequently the courses have no teaching practice or do what they call "peer teaching" when other teachers in the group pretend to be students while you teach. If the course has no teaching practice then it really isn't worth doing.
The two most widely recognised qualifications internationally are the CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching for Adults) from Cambridge University and the Certificate in ELT from Trinity College. It costs between 800-1000 UK pounds to do these courses in most centres. Expensive yes, but the courses are very rigourously monitiored by external regulators to ensure quality is maintained. Generally they are a month long intensive course.
If you are interested in teaching English to Children you can do a special course for this called the CELTYL (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Young Learners) but quite a lot of people do the CELTA course and then later to the two week bolt on option to convert to Young Learner (YL) teaching. This YL course is a fairly new development it has only been running for about three years. I am not sure if any centre offers this in SA. You can check for details on the Cambridge website at www.ucles.org.uk
Hope that helps
