Hello all.
I am rather new here, so please forgive me if this is in the wrong forum. I am a college level science student looking for a way to get a job in San Andres isla de Colombia for this summer. I would prefer to teach, be it English or French or even some sciences, or tutor, but I am open to any other suggestions. I haven't the faintest idea of who to contact for this sort of thing and my Spanish isn't great, which makes searching for contacts a little difficult. I had tried contacting professors at the University of San Andres, only to find out that it's actually an Argentinian University. As you can probably already see, this is a bit of a pickle for me, but I really do want to work on the island. Thus, any suggestions, advice, ideas are more than appreciated. Thank you for your time and kind attention.

ColombiaBoard says on Mar 11, 2007, 13:58: San Andres You obviously haven't been there, it's a tiny island with a few thousand inhabitants, and here's something you also don't know, the island has TWO official languages, spanish AND english, most natives speak english so your intentions to teach english, well, not something needed on the island.

JenniferS says on Mar 11, 2007, 15:20: San Andres I have been there. I did not know that most people there spoke English though, I suppose I was staying in a very Spanish-speaking area. Furthermore, I was only there for a short while, so it is not surprising that there is much I do not know about the island. However, I am doing my best to inform myself about San Andres. I want to work there because I sorta fell in love with the island and the people there, as silly as it may sound. Technically, I can also tutor, or perhaps teach, French as well as a little bit of sciences (chemistry, biology...).

getting better says on Mar 11, 2007, 17:56: Alternative idea Jennifer S. I can't see the point of trying to work in San Andres, though it is a nice place to go for a Carribean holiday, and and has been pointed out they don't need English teachers. If you are a biologist maybe you might like to consider some voluntary work at one of the ProAves nature reserves. You'd have a great time and I am sure some family or friends would help sponsor you if they thought you were helping to save the fantastic biodiveristy of the country. If you are interested I'd be glad to help organise something, though it would be easier if you could get a small group (3-4) together, with at least one person who speaks Spanish and one who knows basic first aid.

JenniferS says on Mar 11, 2007, 20:14: Alternative idea That would actually be a very interesting idea. I know basic first aid and I have a very close friend who is fluent in Spanish. Furthermore, my usual group of friends consists of people very much interested in biology and would be thrilled to have the opportunity to help save the biodiversity. ^-^ Could you tell me more about how all this would be possible? (It really does sound like a dream come true...)
