PBH / colombia (travelguide, pictures) / post |
Hello folks,
I was wondering if there were any (surely there must be) english teachers out there who would be willing to give some advice about getting teaching jobs in Colombia.
My situation is this: I am currently teaching English in Buenos Aires, a very lovely city by the way, but am considering moving up to Colombia to enjoy some better weather, and hopefully better working conditions. I've been teaching for a year down here in institutes and private classes, and basically run around the city all day speaking english with students who are generally quite competent. It's an easy life, but I'd really like some steadier work (i.e. in one or two locations), and i'd like more of a challenge, and also to work with kids. I have a CELTA certification, and 7 years of private school teaching experience in the US (teaching Latin, actually), but no teaching license.
I was looking particularly at Medellin because i have a friend there, and have heard that it's a great city, but am open to other options if better ones exist. I'd really love to get work at a bilingual school or something of that sort, but again, I'm open. My plan right now is to head back to the states for vacation at the end of july and come back down to south america in mid August. Is it possible to find work then? Is it possible to find work from outside the country?
I'm not looking to volunteer, and I'd like to be able to cover my living expenses, but at the same time money is not my primary concern. I can live cheap, and have some savings to carry me through a couple of slow months if need be.
So, any teachers out there?
Any advice?
Any leads?
I did already search through the forums here, but there wasn't much recent stuff, and that's what i'm really looking for.
muchisimas gracias por la ayuda,
dave

The "lovemedellin website" is a piece of crap made by some moron who has only been to Medellin once...you'd be better off reading the Lonely Planet advice from a guy who never even came here! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

tigredelnorte2 says on May 31, 2008, 16:31: This is what I did. I got a hold of the Medellin yellow pages. In the yellow pages are listed many schools. I made several copies of my CV, and made the rounds handing out CV´s. Calling first, and asking to speak to the director is a good idea. I did this on several occasions. Make sure your CV has a local call back number, and/or Colombia cell phone number, and your photo. Most of the personel in the schools, outside of the teachers speak only Spanish, so speaking Spanish will be benificial in finding work. If you were to ask me about a school called ¨Colombo Europeo¨, I would avise you to not even bother. The general School year begins at the end of January, but teachers are hired all throughtout the year. Some of the bilingual schools start in September.
