Teaching in Colombia

I'm being offered a job at a private school in Bogota called Colegio Los Nogales, which is on 202 Street. This site has helped me to get much more comfortable with the idea of coming to Colombia, which at first I wasn't so sure I wanted to do. So now all I'm wondering is a) what is that part of town like? My brother will live in Medellin and has visited Bogota, but couldn't really picture where that is or what it's like, and b) How will I do with only high school and college Spanish at first? The school is finding me a place to live, but I like to be independent if possible, and don't want to have to call someone from work every time I try to walk to the corner and back. c) I'm kind of curious about how much of an ex-pat community is there, and where they tend to come from. I imagine it's a little thin on Americans, which is perfectly fine with me--just curious about other nationalities.

Thanks,

Kevin

Teaching a) That´s way up north, it´s probably one of those private schools in a semi-suburban area. The area is ok, as long as it´s not way too east. To have an exact idea post the exact address, Calle 202 and what´s the crossing avenue? probably Autopista Norte?
b) you mean your spanish is high school/college level? well, if you´re going to teach english then it´s not a problem, I know teachers here who barely know how to order coffee in spanish.

Thanks, and yeah, my Spanish is high school level. The school is bilingual, so no problems there--was just curious about how I will do out in the city, but it sounds like it will be OK at first??? I plan to learn the language quickly.

Calle 202 con carrera 50 Colegio Los Nogales is located in the north part of Bogotá where are most elegant high schools and Universities campus. Nearby there are also clubs and cementeries. At one time there were nice pastures and now with the boom on construction, buildings and new apartemets are taking over mother nature.

Other high schools

The Transmilenio goes up to 190 north and in the area there are many nice places to look for an apartment. It sounds like a good place to work and to live nearby so you won´t have to conmute a lot.

Traffic goes heavy on peak hours for the school buses. Autopista norte is one of the main roads in Bogotá. There is a toll, "peaje" nearby and then follows towns like Cajica, Chia Zipaqira, Guatavita etc.
