Teaching in Bogota.

Hi,

Im new to this site........I just have a few questions about finding English teaching work and living in Bogota.

I visited Colombia last month for the first time....it was my last country to visit on my South America trip, and I really enjoyed my time there...even though I was robbed in Cartagena....the people were friendly...beautiful country side and beautiful woman.....well thats one reason Im asking these questions....I meet a beautiful Colombian girl.....actually I meet quite a few beautiful woman......but one in particular....in Bogota.

Anyhow so I live in Japan teaching English.....but Im over living here and Colombia seems like it would be an interesting place to live for a while......I have a degree in English Literature, TESOL English teaching certificate and about 3 years experience teaching English in Japan.

I know the money would be no where as much as Japan....Im not worried about that....as long as I could live comfortably and learn Spanish.

So is it hard to find English teaching work? what about accommodation?.... any information would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Chao

So,

"Guy meets girl in Colombia, likes her, goes away, comes back again and gets a job teaching English..." :)

My situation is a variation on that theme too!

If it weren't for the pretty girls here, I doubt Colombia would have any foreign English teachers at all.

So, the chicks in Japan aren't as receptive? Or attractive? You could stay with the Asian theme, and go down to Thailand and teach. I heard those Thai chicks love Americans. Judging by the number of Thai women in the Fort Walton Beach, Niceville, Crestview areas of Florida, they marry gringo soldiers by the hundreds.

In our return home from Colombia and in our way to see our brand new grandson, we made our usual stop in Sin City for some Vegas fun, and Lol and Behold what do I see? Old gringo farts with their trophy chicks "Asian Girlies". I asked my old gringo husband [38 year marriage] what's up with that? and he answered the internet my dear the internet, Viagra and Flomax! His take!

The internet, the easiness and the low cost of flying from continent to continent it is making easier for people of different cultures to hook up. Language and social barriers are no so great as once were, and people from different parts of the world do get together and have a great life. My take!

Yeah there are some beautiful woman in Japan, and some of them like foreign guys.
But after living here for a while where woman are often surpressed, as Japan is a male dominated country...and also a lot of Japanese people dont like Gaijin (Gringo`s) you will never be accepted as an equal in Japanese society.....and in Japan alot of people are really scared of you.....as they dont have much contact with foreign people......just over living here.

So when I went to Colombia and meet these friendly beautiful confident woman......who were lots of fun......I thought yeah I could live here......
I haven`t tried meeting girls of the internet.....I dont have to, Im still young, have my looks...and my Kiwi charm.

Thanks Peter,I will try doing a search.

JohnnyFG, I am glad you didn't take what I said as an insult. I have never been to Japan, and have no desire to go there really. I just don't care for their culture. I appreciate it, and respect it - but it isn't my thing. Like you, I would, and do, feel very comfortable in Colombia. So I can totally understand why you would want to make a change and try your thing in Colombia vs. Japan. From what I understand, Japan may be the most closed society in the world - with a few Islamic nations maybe being the exception. I also understand Japan might be the most racist and elitist nation on the planet. They hate Koreans, other Asians ... even people who live within their country now like Okinawa, etc. Are all Japanese like that? - of course not. But talking about the society as a whole, yes. And I don't blame them for being scared of gringos. We nuked their ass twice after they bit off more than they could chew in '41.

Findind a job is not difficult... there are websites like www.elempleo.com or www.computrabajo.com.co in which you can find a lot of vacancies, besides the regular adds in the newspapers. The problem is the salary... if you are seeking a teacher's job, you'll have to work A LOT if you want to rent your own apt and live comfortably. The regular salary for a native english teacher is about 1.5 - 1.8 million pesos (about 750-900) dollars or 25000/hour (if you are lucky to find a good place). With that money you can rent an apartament, eat, go out every weekend, buy furniture once a month, and start saving to buy a car in 6 months. :-)

That doesnt sound too bad Serious_JO. I know the money is nothing compare to TESL in many of the other countries, but the comparison of the living standard seems to be similar ( if your scale of ableling yourself to rent, eat, go out every weekend and a little of savings here and there). Seems like a normal living :).
