Teaching English in Colombia

I have been told there are numerous higher than normal paying jobs for native english language speakers in colombia. Can anyone working there in this area give me some advice.

Teaching I wouldn't say that there are "numerous" jobs for native english speakers but if you can get a job at a bilingual school they pay you a US teacher salary but in Colombia that's a lot of money so you can live comfortably well, besides you have a health plan and other perks depending on the school.
Another option is to teach english to executives and the like but I'm not sure if you can make good money in that area

To teach in a bilingual school you will need some kind of teaching accreditation. You could try the "colombo americanos" who used to be more flexible, but when I was there 16 years ago you needed a TOEFL qualification or equivalent to be able to get a visa.

English Teaching Good Day. I have been teaching English around Latin America for five years now. It is not as easy as it sounds. My advice. Get a certification. Being a native speaker is not enough. You can try and learn the grammar on your own, but an English course will teach you how to teach the grammar and conversation techniques. I am still learning by the way.

You may be able to find a job in Cali, but it will be a lot easier if you have a certification and perhaps a little experience. Colombians are no longer dazzled by having a native speaker as a teacher as Colombian teachers KNOW the grammar and can kick a native teacher's ass in the classroom. I've seen it happen where a Colombian teacher ended up correcting an American's English. The Colombian was completely correct because the "Native Speaker" did not know how to speak English properly and was teaching the students incorrectly. Embarrassing to say the least.

That is my two bit input. Shaner.

I got my certification in Guadalajara, Mexico. A lovely city with many beautiful women. Very intensive course though. It almsot killed me.

Yup

Teaching ColombiaBoard, do you have any suggestion's as far as Bilingual Schools to look into in Medellin? I tried the Search Engine, but a lot of the information posted dates back to 1999. If you have information that you think would be helpful, please share.

CELTA Qualified Looking For English Teaching Work I am a British Citizen currently living in Bogotá who is looking for work teaching English.

Until last year I lived in London where I worked as a consultant for a small Business systems Analysis Consultancy. I came to Bogotá in June 2004 to visit some friends and fell in love with the place and the people.

When I got back to London I talked my colleagues into sending me to Bogotá to undertake some research for the company. The company organized a 3 year Business Visa for me and I have been working for them here ever since. Unfortunately they plan to recall me to London in February 2006. I absolutely do not want to go back permanently, because I have decided that I want to build a future for myself in Colombia.

In order to make my dream a reality I started taking Spanish lessons and now speak basic Spanish. Also in June/July of this year I took some extended leave and successfully completed the CELTA course with the British Council in Bogotá, which I really enjoyed. I have now decided to try and change my career and look for work here as an English teacher but I really don’t know how or where to begin looking.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions as to what I should do next or better still does anyone have a job? I have had some ideas of my own but they don’t seem to be getting me anywhere. I am hoping that posting this message may help to change that. All suggestions would be gratefully received.

Should I apply with the Consulate in Chicago? Should I go to the Tefl course in Cali? Should I talk with a lawyer here or there? Do I stand any chance of getting a visa at a school? Can you just do visa runs every three months without a problem. I will have outside income from a trading account but I would not mind working as well. Secound I need some expesive cosmetic dental work done does anyone know if I should wait and have it done down there or would the work not be worth it monitarly or not done right. Thank you in advance.

part time teaching Hi,

I am currently a communications student in Dallas and have a great opportunity to study a specialization in la Javeriana and masters in marketing in Los Andes free of charge. I will be graduating in two semesters and was wondering if I needed a certificate for teaching English part time, or if that is even possible. I have no idea what the job market looks like for a well paying part time teaching job. I do have some experience, I currently teach at a language school here in Dallas, maybe that helps. Any help would be great, thanks.

Visas Dental I would get a job lined up and then worry about a VISA. I would
take a TEFL course where you are. It would be easier to get a job
commitment even if you have to repeat the certification. I'am
not certain of your dental needs but I would never get it done
there. I have heard of a lady who came down from Miami to Bogota
to get dental done at $1600:) In Miami it would have been $17000:(

Wondering... I keep reading that a person needs some type of certification. Is that a reference to TOEFL, TEFL, CELTA, or just a BA or other type of college degree? As for me, I have been teaching 6th grade math for 9 years and am making my first trip to Colombia this summer with the hope of making many more or maybe just staying down there if it's appealing enough to me. Would it be helpful to teach English here in the states a year before I try to teach it in Colombia?
