Teaching English in Bogota. US born son of Colombians

I know this topic has been discussed to death in these forums, but I have a somewhat different situation. I have read the section on teaching in colombia, but I have need some more specific info.

I am a US citizen born and raised in the US, but both of my parents are from Colombia. I frequently travel to Colombia and have family in Bogota and Medellin. I would like to move to Colombia for a few years since I really miss it.

I am software developer with tons of experience but I never finished my degree. I have many clients that I could continue to service via the internet, but I would like to possibly teach english as a steady source of income. I am willing to get the TEFL certification before I go down there. I registered a few months back at the Colombian consulate as a child of Colombians. This is the first step to getting dual citizenship. What would be my next steps in making myself legally able to work in Colombia? I am not in a huge hurry and want to do things correctly.

I am lucky in that I can stay with relatives while I'm down there, so I could keep living expenses very low.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cedula Hi Colombiano,

I had the same situation as you, made in Medellin, but born in the U.S. Once I registered as a child of Colombians, I went to the Registraduría in Itaguí, and got my cédula de ciudadanía. Once you have the cédula (you can go to the Consulate to get this done; it takes about 8 months to get the original in the mail, but you get a contraseña that you can travel to Colombia with in the meantime, and get your other paperwork with), you are pretty much set. As you are now considered a Colombian citizen, you need to have a passport to get into and out of Colombia. With your cedula de ciudadania, you are set. With it, you can vote, open up a bank account, etc.

Good luck!
