TEACHING BUSINESS CLASSES IN A UNIVERSITY IN MEDELLIN - Is this possible?

Does anyone know if I would be able to teach business classes in english at any of the local universities down in Medellin? I'm being told by one of my MDE contacts that this is possible and that it would pay well. She too is trying to secure a finance teaching job. We both went to the same graduate school in the states. Just want some insight if it can be provided..Thanks in advance

I have a masters, MBA ,and live here in Manizales for 3 years. Theflatline is correct, many universities here. I have been asked to be a part time professor and give classes on marketing, economics, especially U.S. Differences, BUT, they will not pay...
I know this because they warned me, not in budget. Personally, I am not interested in doing for profit; If this gives you any info. then welcome, if not, thanks for listening to my rant. joe

Check with the Autonoma in Manizales, you can make good cash and connections in town, by teaching in the english department, and in the the english diplomados.

Once they realize you are a competentent teacher, and you have subbed for other departments, then you can request a job teaching in your field.

It is what I did.

I've got a Master's in Business also. I think it would be extremely challenging to teach Colombians American (Corporate) business. The culture is different. Maybe in Bogota.
Also, the pay is horrible. If this is for the love of teaching, great. But, I doubt it is.
I think a business person would be better suited to operate some sort of business, like I do out of Mexico.
Import/Exports are interesting, lucrative, and rapidly changing.
Just my 2 cents.....

Forget it, your education and experience means nothing here. In Colombia, it is who you know, not what you know. I got lucky and have a really good job at a school, but now that is starting to suck. I went from teaching 25 hours a week the first year to 37 hours the second year with a very little raise, the min. required by law.

This would be a good time for Brian (Tiger Paw) to chime in.
He taught for a few years and has had enough!

All great advice...I have to agree with Philly. It is who you know and not what you know but then again, its like that here in the states too my friend...unfortunately. That is why I'm really banking on my friends and family who live down there to get me into some type of an organization, what it is i have yet to determine...Its either that or win the lotto

It is possible and indeed there are many people doing just that in Medellin from the U.K.Contact U.P.B, EAFIT and Escuela de Ingeniros as they all have business courses in English and hire nativ speakers from time to time.It can be done with patience nd perserverance.

Sounds like you´re lucky to me. The exact opposite has happened to me along with many others. I wish I had the problem of more work and more money.

Yes, you can. I looked into EAFIT's business program when I was studying Spanish there. A number of the classes in both their undergrad and grad programs are conducted in English. While I was there, they were actually looking for a professor (full time I think) to teach something like international culture.

If you have an MBA and real business experience, you'd be a great fit for EAFIT. It's just a matter of if they have openings and arranging the work visa (which can be a real hassle).

Span...This is exactly what I was told by a colleague who I studied with here in the states and she now moved back to Medallo..I just wanted to make sure I heard her right..That would be my dream..I'm actually trying to teach community college courses here as an adjunct part time so hopefully my experience in that would help.

Jorge,
What do you do and how much do you make? We can take a poll right here on PBH, and everyone will tell you the same, it is who you know, not what you know. Yes, sometimes you are in the right place at the right time(my situation), but the majority of the time, it is really tough here because if they do not know you, they will not even give you an interview.

The best way to live in colombia as a forigner is to teach at a high class elementary/high school. But you usuall need a teaching degree. Those teachers make like 2500 dollars a month plus the school pays for there apartment, transportation, and meals at school. Ive meet some of the teachers and they live a pretty decent live..make me want to get my teaching degree..

Just come here, wander around the campuses and arrange to sit down and talk with department heads. This will be easier if you speak Spanish, of course. The head of international business/the MBA program (I think) at EAFIT is a German guy who speaks English. I don't think lack of teaching experience will hurt you, but it wouldn't hurt to have thought through how you will answer questions about that type of thing in an interview.

Well knowing that this dude is German definitely makes me feel a lot better. I do speak spanish though I feel way more comfortable speaking the english language. I would imagine that having contacts would definitely increase my chances as it does anywhere in the world I would think. The only things I have under my belt are real world work experience...no teaching experience whatsoever although I have tutored on the side, but then again who hasn't
