Taxis from MDE into city

What is the process of taking a taxi from Medellin airport MDE into the city. I hear it is a pretty long ride. Is there a certain procedure to follow at the airport? Is it safe to just get in any taxi or is there an airport offical that helps with taxi service? Is the meter used from the airport or do you pay straight, agreed upon fare? If anyone has experience taking taxis from MDE, I would appreciate your insight and experience. Thanks.

It is probably best to call ahead to have a taxi ready to pick you up upon your arrival in Medellin.

Here is the name and number of the driver I use for airport pickup/dropoff and for tours in and around Medellin as well. Juan Manuel 311 333 9874

Juan lived in the states for 30 years and speaks English. He has a reliable car, with A/C and it's an it's insured!

Just tell him your amigo from Chicago gave you his contact information, in case he asks.

Also, tell him to make sure to pick me up in January, jejejejeje!

the taxis out in front of the airport in the queue are all registered and authorized to take on fares to ...anywhere. what the going rate currently is im not sure. 25-30 thousand pesos.

if your're adventuresome, at the glorietta out in front of the airport you can take a cab with other passengers for 5,000. don't worry about it, i've done it literally 100 times.

but use the 'call agead' or the cabs in queue in front of the airport and all will be well. been doing it for 19 years.

Taxi from the airport is 42k.
Taxi coletivo is 12k, to San Diego.
Busetas, I think is 6k, to Terminal del Norte.
All departing from inside the airport.

Taxi to the airport is 36k, if you call Taxi Blu Service.

What is a coletivo. Is that a bus?
Busetas is that another bus system?

What time do they stop running? I have an arrival flight at 9 in the evening.

Thanks,

RUV,
Coletivo is a taxi shared with three other passengers. It leaves you in San Diego, or wherever on Las Palmas on the way to San Diego.
Busetas is a small bus. Last stop is at Terminal del Norte. It takes the Autopista to Medellin.

I don't know about the time, but I'd say you won't have any problem to get a bus at 9 PM. Taxi and Coletivo don't stop running.

I have been using all three means (taxi, coletivo, bus) without any problems.

RUV, from experience several times arriving in Medellin around that hour...

I would say, by the time you get your luggage (and clear customs, if the flight's international), it will be about 9.30pm and the bus won't be running. If you ask around, none of the staff is really sure until what time the bus service runs.

Taxi colectivos will be running, though you may be sitting around waiting. The last couple of trips, we left with only three passengers and each person puts in some extra cash just to get moving.

que nota!

MitchAlvarez -

Everyone's got a taxi, who does this, does that, or whatver the promise. I met Juan Manuel through a woman I know in Medellin. I phoned him and he came to my hotel to pick me up, dressed more like a gringo than a Paisa. That's the first thing I told him. He was all polite and all. I also said it was obvious he lived in the states from his appearance.

His vehicle has A/C and it is insured. I did not realize how HOT it was in Santa Fe de Antioqiua until I hopped out of the car. WOW!! THE HEAT!!!

Again, many others promised, but never delivered.

36k pesos to the airport with taxi blu service? Will they pick me up at my house in Guayabal? That's cheap. Last time I went to the airport with my wife we paid 55k for the trip. And that was with her uncle driving the taxi. I would think family would give me a break but I guess not.

As I already wrote, but someone doesn't get it, normal taxi is 42k. If you do not believe me, you can check it on the sticker with the official price that all taxis have on their front mirror.

If you want to pay more, like 50k as suggested, you're welcome. They'll make no problem.

Taxi Acoa (261 1616), which has got a blue stripe, has got a discount from Medellin to Rionegro (not from Rionegro to Medellin).

55k with family taxi? That's completely normal in Colombia.
