tattoos in Colombia

Hello all,
I will be going to Medellin, this December, with two of my Colombian friends. They are very Americanized (or Canadianized to be specific). They have told me to cover up my tattoos wherever I go. The only visible tattoo that I do have is a tribal arm band that shows when I wear a short sleeved shirt (artistic, and non gang-related). I don't know if they are being overly-cautious or if they are just going off of what the old generation in Colombia thinks about tattoos, or if there is a really judgemental mentality that exists in Colombia (specifically, Medellin). I've heard wonderful things about Medellin, and I am excited to tour the city and enjoy the lively night life.

I'd say don't worry about it... Yes, you may get a few weird looks, but it depends on 1. where is the tattoo, 2. what is the tattoo.... A tribal band will probably not be looked at weird at all.... I have a large tattoo on my upper back and I did get quite a few looks and I'm sure a few people stayed away from me... But, that's because a. I'm a girl and b. It's big.... The kids thought it was cool and came up to touch it, but there was a few people that looked at me weird... We went out to one of the Salsa clubs, so that might also be kind of odd in that environment too... and my blouse was back-less... My theory is, "I'm a tourist and nobody knows me to judge me"....

man i''l tell you i was in medellin back in the early 90's and i have 2 tattoos on my wrist and no one ever said anythjing.i'll be throwing parties after nov. 20when you get to medellin .get in touch with me and ill show you the real party cirquit.

Hum, our parents sees it as a "born under a bad sign". A bad tatto it´s often made it on jail (a quick tip: If you see chicks selling candies on buses, streets, ect. . .with blurry blue inks tattos in the wrist, carefull that´s usually a juvie tatto¡).

But If have a piece of art, You shouldn´t be worry of anything. Still, prejudige people come in all colors and flavors, so I´m sure you get used to the weird looks.

it's b.s. information. i've lived in medallo for 19 years, and although you wont see tattoos like stateside, there's plenty around. even on the stars--male and female--on tv's telenovelas..

not to worry, no problems on the tattoo front. you might have some issues if you had your head tattooed like the guy in 'pappillon' the movie. don't know if i spelled that right.

colombians are REAL people, they have priorities in their issues. tattoos ain't one of them.
