tariff on import of used cars......

has anyone checked of late how much they tax used vehicles on entry to colombia? i haven't checked into it in many years and am curious if it's down or up. in the 90's it was quite high.

I have read that, used cars can not be imported, except for short term use, or with continual renewal of permits.

Moot point-a used vehicle can not be imported.

Hi Gator...i've heard of classic cars >35 (o algo) years old can be imported....do you know anything about this??? Thanks..

guacharaca says on May 10, 2008, 07:42:

"a used vehicle can not be imported" except in San Andreas and Providencia, where I seen quite a few (I suspect at least one I looked at was stolen from the States).

docwilliam says on May 10, 2008, 08:02:

sloopskipper.....what does it take to do the temp. import? Is there a large tax for that and how long do they allow for a temp? Please let me know, this may be an option for me.

"There's no time to panic"

RAAAY says on May 10, 2008, 08:05:

Doc.........You get a 3 month permit. You can then get an extension of a further 3 months. There are no taxes at all.

After you have used up the 6 months you can take the vehicle out of the country, usually into Venezuela or Ecuador and repeat the process.

docwilliam says on May 10, 2008, 08:11:

cool, i am all over that....the price of vehicles here are crazy! I know that I could drive my jeep down to panama and then ship from there or ship from Fl. whatever is cheaper.

tourista, at this time.

sloopskipper says on May 10, 2008, 08:23:

Thanx ray, i wan't sure who answered that for me before.

But the renewal after three months, then drivining out of the country, and beginning again seems, to me, to be too much of a PITA.

And driving to Panamá? Not some I'd be too eager to do, and not too sure how much of a hassle it might be to ship a U.S. registered car out of Panamá. I know it sure was a pain bringing my Jeep in, from Puerto Rico.

Doc, you also might want to check what is involved in shipping from FL. To get my car out of PR, the underside had to be steam cleaned, then inspected and blessed by the PR. Policia. Supposedly they were tardy in doing that, and my container missed a direct voyage and all ended up hung up in Cartagena, of all places. So, Jeep was there before me, jaja.

Maybe is easier from the Continent.

By the way, avoid Continental Relocation Services in Miami.

RAAAY says on May 10, 2008, 08:34:

Doc......that's one of the many that work best.

Sloop..." But the renewal after three months, then dribining out of the country, and beginning again seems, to me, to be too much of a PITA."

The 3 month renewal is a piece of cake. Just go to your local DIAN office. It took me ten minutes.

The driving out of the country part, really depends on your tolerance for a spin. The funny part is you don't actually even need to take the vehicle out. You go to Cucuta, bring the vehicle to the DIAN and have the permit exit stamped.Check into a hotel.

Take a taxi to the immigration office near the border and get stamped out. Continue on to the Venezuelan imigration and get stamped in, turn around and go back and sit by the pool in your hotel.

Next day, take the taxi back to the Venezuelan office and get stamped out. Get stamped in at the Colombian office and take your vehicle back over to DIAN for a new permit. Beginning to end, this process takes about one hour, maybe two, if there are people in front of you at DIAN.

sloopskipper says on May 10, 2008, 08:44:

hmm, interesting, thanx.

But I expect, like Panamá, when you dispose of the vehicle (unless you set it on fire), sombody will need to pay the tax, no?

Here, the tax goes back to the value at the time it was imported.

So, somewhere down the line, somebody might owe taxes on a $20,000 vehicle that's now only worth a couple grand, maybe less.

But I am talking about the big fraud in Panamá where they claim with Pensionada visa you can import a new car, duty-free, every three years. NOT TRUE!. It is not an exoneration, but simply a cruel deferment.

RAAAY says on May 10, 2008, 08:58:

I'm not sure what you mean about taxes here. There are no taxes for importing a vehicle on a temp permit.

You said "RAAAY says on May 10, 08:12: flag

What type of Visa do you have for Colombia..?"

But nobody answered and you didn't continue your thought. Do you, or anyone, know the LONGEST a car/moto can be brought down here without hassle such as the three month renewals? I thought there was one option that allows you to have your car/moto here only for the life of your visa - is that true?

You won't find a tourist here...

Frank, I heard about the same, but never found a reference. Now, it would be interesting to get an old car in Colombia and have it fully redone here.
Actually I hope to buy a '78 or '79 Bronco next week... I hope to post some pictures in a couple of months...

robi666 says on May 10, 2008, 19:05:

Frank, you definitely cannot LEGALLY import used car. Well, you can import used car but from the current year.
Yes, there are taxes on new cars from Venezuela. Like from anywhere else.

Wood is real teak. And leather everywhere.
New 2006 Silverado engine and transmission adapted to chassis... so this truck kicks ass! Actually it is scaring to drive...

Cost... incredible! Work is so cheap in Colombia.

Gator says on May 10, 2008, 20:19:

Generally speaking to be judged an antique/classic the age is like 25 to 30 years old, depending on the car. You must offer some type of "proof" the car is an antique or a classic. Accepted proof is usually copies of collector/antique magazines that either feature the car in question or list sale prices. I understand Barrett/Jackson Auction Dealers has a web site that his prices and models. I am also sure you must completed the process and obtain the exception before the vehicle is allowed into the country.

The information was on DIAN's web site.

it should get better fuel economy than the ford version. But yes, looks a bit strange to me because I have owned a Suburban Z71 with the same engine. all the same to me though, its a good choice that will be dependable. What did the truck have? The 5.0L pushrod engine?
