In any case, I have always said that the most wonderful women are found in the small cities and towns far from the swanky parts of Colombia. Not only are they beautiful, but they are sweeter, more traditional and less jaded. That isn't to say that there aren't some great women in the big cities.

It doesn't alter the fact that Miss Colombia flubbed her answer to the final question, wore a horrible dress, and had a hair style from the 1980s.

Simply answering in Spanish probably would have tipped the scale in her favour. IMO

Colombian New Yorkers Celebrate Country's Independence

July 20, 2008

New Yorkers with ties to Colombia celebrated the country's independence Sunday in Queens.

It was 198 years ago that Colombia won freedom from Spain.

While there was plenty of food, music, and entertainment at Flushing Meadows Park for the Independence Day event, Colombians were also marching for peace.

"Around two or three weeks ago we had some people who were liberated, so it's actually very special," said one event participant. "We are celebrating the liberation of that and also asking for peace for our country."

"I represent Colombia wherever I go," said another. "I wish Colombia would liberate the people held in captivity in the jungle because my heart feels, my heart is with them."

Miss Colombia, who was the first runner up in the Miss Universe pageant, also made an appearance.
