Swedish citizen and wife missing, feared kidnapped, in Colombia
Bogota (dpa) - Colombian authorities were searching Friday for a Swedish citizen and his wife who were possibly abducted by an armed group in a rebel-controlled northern region of the country.
"A joint operation by the police and the army has been launched to determine if it is a disappearance or a kidnapping," Cordoba province police spokesman Roger Cordero told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.
The missing Swede was identified as Erin Ronald Larson and his wife as Diana Pena.
Locals told the authorities that Larson and his companion were held up by an armed group in a rural, wooded area in the town of Tierralta, Cordero said.
Cordoba is a region in which extreme-right paramilitaries have had military and territorial control for decades. Some of the areas vacated by demobilized paramilitaries have been occupied by commandos of the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
Some 31,000 fighters have put down their weapons since paramilitaries of the United Self-Defence Groups of Colombia (AUC) initiated talks with the government in July 2004. One dissident paramilitary group remains active.

Desideria (Moderator) says on May 18, 2007, 10:25: These people just don't listen they think that nothing bad can happen to them, just because they're Swedes and come from a neutral, socialdemocratic country with a good international reputation of fairness and non-involvement. The wife should've known better, even if her Swedish husband didn't. I don't know these people, at least by name, did the article say where in Sweden they were from? Desideria (Moderator) says on May 18, 2007, 10:30: ok, they were living in Colombia There were a couple of Swedish guys that were kidnapped a few years ago in Colombia, also working at the construction of a hydroelectric plant, one of them was married to a Colombian woman the other one toan Ecuadorian woman. Both of them were released and chose to stay in Colombia. Could this be the same guy? "None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free." —Johann Wolfgang von Goethe |

Atrevido says on May 19, 2007, 12:58: The Cali paper El Pais reports she was his novia and they were taken out of their finca and taken away in their own vehicle by paras. Also that the plan may be to sell them to the FARC.

Desideria (Moderator) says on May 19, 2007, 13:16: The Stockholm paper reported her being his common-law wife. There hasn't been a lot of additional information, but it looks like it wasn't a road block and that they were taken from their home. It's also not confirmed if he had worked for the Swedish company Scania when they built a hydroelectric plant in Colombia and two of their engineers were kidnapped and later released by the Farc. tomtom33 says on May 20, 2007, 11:55: This Gringo bobo merely follows the customs in his adopted country. If every guy in Colombia who fooled around with a gal 30 years his junior were nabbed, there would be a lot of Colombianos in that group.

|
Miguel_Clavo says on May 20, 2007, 12:23: and why would their ages matter to anyone? it is their business and noone elses..miserable people expect others to do the same as them and be miserable as well....i say more power to those guys and girls....it is their business only.....and i would guess that those types of relationships with large age gaps would only be increasing in this millenium...not decreasing...despite of what others think....so it looks like the kidnappers have their work cut out for them.... kat1 (Moderator) says on May 20, 2007, 12:28: what age have to do with the kidnapping? i would not wish for anyone to be kidnapped, it is a horrible experience.

cayita says on May 20, 2007, 15:16: Can't understand why he would think he is not kidnappable in that region in particular or anywhere else for that matter. He must have had money and that really is enough with these people.

tomtom33 says on May 20, 2007, 15:24: Damn good thing I'm only 19 years older than my novia of 3 years. I didn't know that I risked such a fate had I dated someone 11 years yournger than she is. And I have.

Miguel_Clavo says on May 20, 2007, 15:31: Damn, TT33!!! 19 years!!! dont you know there are people in the world who dont approve of that!!!!! Robert Jorge says on May 20, 2007, 17:33: What's wrong livefreeordie? Are you all hung up about other people's ages because your ex was 30 years your senior? Did he treat you bad?

Gomezman5 says on May 20, 2007, 18:10: I'm still waiting for someone to say that it was the Swedish guys fault that he got kidnapped. That's how these threads play out. I guess it has already been said. The guy married some chick 30 years younger than him. So that's the lesson. If you are going to marry a girl that much younger than you, than marry her and take her ass out of Colombia......which is something I think most people do anyway.

webmanco says on May 20, 2007, 19:47: Keep waiting have a seat But, I'm going to start making some assumptions here.... Which means I might actually end up making an ass out of myself ..........Thu 04 17, 2008 11:34 am |

medefockinllin says on May 20, 2007, 20:12: Basically, this kidnapping story is equivalent to 1) the swedish guy buying a copy of guns and ammo

kat1 (Moderator) says on May 21, 2007, 00:20: Erick Ronald Larsson, forest engineer, he is 68 years of age and for 10 years resides in Tierralta. he came to the country part of the foreigners' 'legion' contracted for the construction of the hydroelectrics Urrá.

Atrevido says on May 23, 2007, 05:14: Quite Right Quite right. Although you never really know for sure, whatever else they might be the paracos are generally not a danger to foreigners either visiting or resident. I´ve sat with another foreigner next to a table full of them at a panaderia on several occaisions and they never paid us any attention. On the other hand I´ve never heard of foreigners being able to reside unharmed in a FARC area. If they don´t kidnap him outright they will extort him to the point where he can´t stay. This happened to someone I´m aquainted with.

JMCana says on May 23, 2007, 05:30: It happens - stop it happening It does not matter where the guy is from or how old he is or how old is wife is or which group took him. The bottom line is that it happened in Colombia and it happens more times than it should. It gives the country a bad name and reduces tourism dollars. Colombia has made progress with the roads becoming safer over the last few years. Now concentration needs to be put on reducing these type of incidents and reducing the bad publicity.

cayita says on May 23, 2007, 06:04: honestly I still can not travel the roads here at night without an element of fear. When I was in the states I was so at peace on the roads. Just watching for police and for crazy drivers but no fear of running into a road block if I took a side road at night, either from bandits or whoever.... Hopefully one day this will leave me. But as of now it has not. To be clear things are safer here and I am enjoying that added security in my travels through the countryside. I just wish it was without any worry. It is not yet but one day old memories hopefully will be able to slip away and a new generation will be free of this.

Atrevido says on May 23, 2007, 07:18: Cayita I don´t know how old you are but the only active and dangerous guerrilla group in all of South America isn´t going to even deminish in your lifetime. I´m sure you´ve been following the story of Jhon Frank Pinchao who reported that the secuestrados are chained together by the neck every night. These people are animals with no human values whatsoever. The only good news I´ve read is that their bullets are costing them more.
