Panamanian officials plan to hand over two suspected FARC members to authorities in Colombia in the coming days.
One of them is Tiberio Chamí, who surrendered to authorities on May 2 after he was found in the Darién. He will be joined by an unnamed minor who was captured in the Darién on April 20.
The minor had originally told authorities that he was a Panamanian, but they were able to confirm that he is, in fact, a Colombian.
The paperwork for the return of the two guerrillas has passed into the hands of authorities with the National Immigration Service, which is the last step before they are deported. That is expected to take place within the next several days.
They are both being deported under an article in the new immigration law that denies entry to foreign residents “if they pose a risk or threat to national security or the international community.”
The cost of deportation, valued at $285 for each person, is being covered by immigration.
So far this year, six other suspected guerrillas have been returned to Colombia.
Minister of Government and Justice Dilio Arcia said yesterday that the State Border Service plans to increase security in the areas along the border with Colombia.
