Sunrise Beach in San Andres?

Hello.

We are traveling to San Andres soon (if they let us in Colombia!), and are staying at the Sunrise Beach. We've read some pretty bad reviews, but wondered if anyone around here has been there fairly recently. If that's the case (or you if you know someone who's been there recently) what did you think?

Even if it sucks, it's a done deal that we are staying there (it's a present), but just feel kind of curious about what to expect.

Any recommendations for things to do in the Island?

I'm dying for sun... I love Portland but man is gray!

Get out of town and go explore the southern end of the island and the backside of the island where there's no beach but some cool places to swim. Don't go to "La Piscina" but, rather, a little bit N. of there is a free public spot with a diving board off the coral limestone cliff into the most beautiful water you've ever seen.

Maybe it's one of those James Bond motos.

By the way, how far would you say Johnny Cay is from the main beach area on San Andres? I *think* I saw a guy swim there and back. Does that sound possible?

Yes, people do swim it but for an average person I would call it way too far to swim.

Go to the Blow Hole. The dudes have a shack where their wives cook some of the best Black Crab I have ever eaten. Excellent Losters also. When the wave's crash against the shore. The water and air come flying up/out this Blow Hole. Nice little tourista spot.

Silvia, in my opinion the finest things to see in San Andres are all under water. It's very much worth going scuba diving there. Or getting out on a boat to go snorkeling, if you don't scuba. I dove a spot called the "Blue Wall" that was spectacular.

I, personally, think "El Aquario" is a total rip-off. It's a tiny sandspit with a thousand Colombian tourists all trying to snorkel at once. We bailed on our tour boat and hired our own lancha back to shore, which dropped us right at our hotel.

Snorkeling in San Andres is wonderful, it was so easy to just sit on the edge of the coral and just jump into this giant pool!, and diving is spectacular also.
The best food I ever had was in San Luis at "DONDE FRANCHESCAS", it is the best sea food you can have!

I couldn't do the swim, that's for sure, but I guess if people can do the cold, 34 km English Channel, they could certainly swim a couple thousand meters in warm, buoyant salt water.

When your sitting on the beach it looks plausible to swim out there. I started to swim out there but didn't even get past the rope barrior when I realized no way I was going to make it. Of course you may also have to watch out for the jet-skis. I almost hit a couple idiots out there because I didn't see their heads through the waves.
