The question is not so much price and safety... as distance. The choice is between a short flight and two days of eating dust.

Your Tio Jaramillo.. is correct-why waste two days? Safe but long, about a 1000k and say 18/20 hours, and boring. On Berlinas it will cost just about $200.000 pesos rt. Air likely 300.000 rt and 1 1/2 hours.

I prefer the bus Get the bus in Barranquilla in the afternoon and you will get to Bogota the next morning. You'll get to see the country and relax, have a nice dinner somewhere that night, get a good night's sleep, save lots of money over the air fare, even more so in the high season. Taxis to and from the airport cost more than to/from the bus station which is closer in. Also, better chance of having good conversations with fellow passengers, even making friends. No need for reservations, just go to the bus station and leave. You can even haggle down the price to 60,000 or 70,000 pesos, one way. What's so bad about spending 16-18 hours on a bus?

A matter of preference... The trip by bus, let's say once, is actually interesting (I would not do it routinely). Unfortunately it travels at night so you'd miss most of the stuff. My back gives me a hard time after a few hours, so I would never call a night in a bus "a good night's sleep", but a younger person might. Berlinas del Fonce is one of the better ones (http://www.berlinasdelfonce.com/html/Rutas.html). They list the trip at 107,000 CP.
