Suba is in Bogota, it used to be a separate town, but it is now inside the city and is part of the capital district. Traffic is heavy, lots of construction work going on at present.

Not being... ...from Bogotá you will not know when you travel from Bogotá to Suba. Suba is mainly middle/lower economic class. Hard working people trying to make ends meet. The Suba Hills however, has houses and apartments in strata 5 and 6. You will find properties very expensive in that area.

As in other parts of Bogotá, there are rumors of gangs operating in Suba. Not too different from many of our U.S. cities.

is it a relatively safe area? i sponsor a young boy in suba through my church and was wondering if it would be safe to visit his house with a social worker from the organization.

Suba is exactly the way that aztec describes it Lower--to middle economic class. Yes it's relatively safe, especially during the day. If you plan on going there, and you are not from there or you are going unescorted, you should limit your travel to day time hours. Look, there are some bad areas, so your asking about the area as a whole and that does not really help. In general, because you know where this kid is coming from, you have to know that he has to be living in one of those areas on "the fringe" so to speak You also need to keep in mind that Suba is kind of remote. I don't know where you will be staying, but depending on the part of Suba, it might be difficult to find transortation back to the where you are coming from---it depends on the hour.

In general, taxis in Bogota are cheap, I would just make it a point of going early and in an ideal situation, you might want to see if the same taxi might be willing to pick you up once again when you are ready to return to where you were coming from.

my gf used to live there Suba is estrato 3 and 4 for the most part, just like most of the rest of Bogotá. It is no more or less dangerous than the rest of the city in general.
They are building a Transmilenio line out there which may or may not be ready by the time you get there. If not, it is just short of 2 hours to get downtown with all the traffic, or to get there from downtown. During rush hour it can be worse!

La Floresta My boyfriend is from La Floresta part of Suba. How is it there safety-wise? What is the atmosphere like? When did Suba become part of Bogota?

I stayed in Suba for 2 weeks on my last trip to Bogota and had no problems. My Apt. was about 2 blocks from the Suba Centro Mall and never once had a problem of any type. That said, I was not walking around after 9pm when the mall closed and the streets deserted. That would be another story which I wouldn't recommend.Lots of Taxis and Buses around the Mall.
