In Cali, generally, the majority of the guys wear blue jeans, casual shoes or gym shoes

The shoes are typically this style:

and a polo shirt (standard polo shirt and long sleeved polos). It's much cheaper to buy it in the states than in Cali.

yes, the guys wear that type of shoes, but 95% of the guys wear fake brand shoes.

They love t-shirts and polo t-shirts are also very popular.. what people in Cali love the most are brands! It doesn't really matter from what year or season it is, as long as it is from a brand they love it. Most people wear fake brand clothes.

I am very careful and only wear the real stuff ( I buy it online in the states). If you go to an outlet mall you can buy your tees and jeans real cheap, as long as they are brand.. in cali they don't even KNOW what fashion seasons or temporadas are!

I guess it really doesnt matter, just as long as there is a logo on it, or preferably ALL OVER the shirt or t-shirt, the trick is to buy clothes when out of season. For example, Cartagena is always HOT, therefore I usually buy my clothes online in the winter, when its cheaper. I given out PLENTY of Old Navy clothes, which I found on clearance as gifts, and everyone thinks im the MAN. jeje

People love brands... and here in Cali even the fake ones can be expensive.. so I buy them online on the clearance, generally 10,000-20,000 a piece, brand name, from the states (so its not counterfeit) and I love it.

many fake ones are even more expensive than what I pay online for the real stuff!

I don't give out too much though..............

I think people think I am some sort of fashion queen because I have a lot of t-shirts and tops and all of brands (even though a lot of Gef too and some americanino-chevignon-tennis stuff).

But its cheap and something from 2 or 3 years ago is still seen as cool, people don't even know it if something is 2 or 3 years old.

I have several old navy tops, and I really like them even though the quality is not what you would expect from a brand. I don't buy for others (presents) online.

There still some stuff left.

I guess my message was to shop out of season, that way you can save some money.

The one difference I've seen is that the it's pretty common to see "worn" out clothes here in the States, like baseball caps and cargo pants with that worn out look. I didn't see this in Colombia and even my family said it was pretty ugly to wear clothes like that. I think it's pretty cool myself. =P

Mono, thats probably because that is how street guys clothes look (and no, they don't buy them like that).

E-Man says on Sep 10, 2008, 13:20:

In the states you can buy very nice clothes cheap at Kohls (on sale), Mervyns and Macys (not at the regular price but when it's on sale (50% to 60% off) with additional 15% discount using Macys card).

As Monita said shopping online here has even better prices. For example, in Cali my girlfriends Diesel shoes cost about $150 US dollar and I bought the same shoes online for about $50.

Agreed that the brand (with a higher class brand) shown on the clothing is important (whether real or not).

i think i was the first guy to wear pre-distressed jeans in colombia in the 80s. they had no idea that at fred segal's in hollywood or malibu, they cost me $180.00 and they thought that the rip/worn/patch was just gauche i cared? i wore what ever i bloody wanted. the belt on the jeans was woven sterling silver and cost about $350.00 they knew that? nah, but i did. and if i felt like it, i'd wear sandals also from fred segal or BH and not cheap. so, what to do? appease yourself, be comfortable, just don't offend folks. if clothes offend someone...it's the wrong person to be concerned about.

it was so difficult in those years, if i didn't appease myself, i'd have gone nuts. alone, didn't have the language down, had a shit load of work to do, an army of employees and not one fricken soul to sit down and have a drink with. back then, they thought that i was one crazy gringo in medellin...so much was done by sign language and that ole filthy lucre. what else was i gonna do. finally i hired an english speaking secretary to take the edge off of things. first i hired a drop dead gorgeous piece of eye candy as a secretary also english speaking, but that was 'non-plus' with the mrs. so much to my chagrin, i pink slipped her and hired the other one...a tad on the doudy side, but turned out to be effecient and good company. and honest with my money.

Oh yeah, they go nuts over those jeans but I think it's mainly because they're expensive down there. Here, not so much. They're just aight.

In Cartagena ive notice von dutch, diesel, armani exchange, hollister, all types of clothing being worn by tourist & some Colombians, (mostly upper class). For the most part, I have seen a bit of a fashion sense in Colombia, I have also seen some chimbo t-shirts being proudly worn. I guess what you wear should be an extension of yourself, who cares what other say, and just to take a page from Elmo's book, Hey POLO how the fok do you know so much about that thar fashion so much? simple; NEW YORK FOKIN CITY.

Thank you!

really, polo....how many "average" colombians can spring $100-$200 bucks for a pair of jeans? not today.

Most people cant afford $100-$200 jeans, my family included. I guess the mix up was on the "chimbo" comment. When I go to Colombia, yes I bring clothes for my family, and when I shop for them, they rather me buy in quantity rather than quality, thats why I gave out the oldnavy link above. Heres another link I thought of when I was going home last night.

I think Aeropostale is a good medium between quality and quantity

Monita Linda says on Sep 11, 2008, 16:35:

I think it is better to go for quality. Because here in Cali,w e don't really have seasons (hence no real fashion ins and outs) so people wear their clothes literally for years and years.. that's why I would go for quality...

It does seem that the people cared about fashion more than quality, because I wore torn up clothes but I was wearing good brands.

ichitagochi....that's what i was saying above...i had these aged, tattered looking jeans that i used to wear but they cost, $180.00. back in the '80's in medellin people thought they were wierd.
