Ben.... Mr. Hollywood is trying to make a funny ;-) It's spelled Colombia, with two "o"'s, and I have spelled it wrong before also.

Good luck with your studies! I don't know of good universities; sorry.

Affordable Spanish lessons Ben,

I'm writing you from Bucaramanga a city between Bogotá and Cartagena; Bucaramanga is 35 minutes from Bogotá by plane and 9 hours by car. I am an English teacher at Centro Colombo Americano a renown institution in Colombia. I offer you a very cheap plan to learn Spanish during the time you desire, it could be one, two, three weeks or more.

These are the values in Colombian pesos (1USD = 2400):

1 week 2weeks 3weeks
Lodging (with a family) 130000 195000 260000
Spanish course (25 hours per week)275000 550000 825000
3 meals 105000 210000 315000
Other expenses (transport)* 25000 50000 75000
Total 535000 1005000 1475000

* Transport in the city is going to be paid by you. Local bus fare is $750

The lessons are one to one and are going to be given to you by young people who have a very good English knowledge and even some of them are students finishing their careers in education.

Near Bucaramanga there are interesting places for practice of X-treme sports (e.g. rafting, paragliding, etc) or you could during weekends visit beautiful colonial towns.

I could give you references about who I am, because it has happen with other people and it is really normal because we don’t know each other. This week is coming a boy from the USA to study Spanish here and he could give you references too in the next days.

For further questions do not hesitate to contact me at franklealt at yahoo.com.ar

Best regards,

Francisco Leal

Dollar to Colombian pesos conversion Actually the official rate change is 1USD = 2615 Colombian pesos (COP) but at the exchange banks you will be given about 2400/USD.

If you want to have fun....choose Cartagena or Barranquilla

If you want to study... Medellín with its perfect climate.

If you want to study and feel you are not in Colombia... then Bogota.

And if you really want to study... I guess Popayan will do it!

Chuck, it's a little ridiculous to say that in Bogota you "feel you are not in Colombia", that is so untrue, Bogota brings together people from all over the country and also gives a taste of all Colombia has to offer... the good, the bad and the ugly. Anyways you can hop on a car or bus for a couple of hours and be anywhere from tropical lowlands party-towns to high mountain nature reserves. Besides, you can have just as much fun in Bogota or Medellin as you would in Barranquilla or Cartagena, it just depends on what your idea of fun is, and to a large extent to luck.

livinit, could you give us some more details, it's really hard to give you advice with such a general question.

The best University at Barranquilla Hello Ben. If you want to study at Barranquilla, the best option for you is Universidad del Norte. This university is very good and also it is certified as one of the best universities in Colombia. There is a web page you can visit if you want more information about it: www.uninorte.edu.co
I hope this information works for you.

thanks,

i was leaving the question intentionally open to see what people would say, i have contacted Universidad del Norte already and will probably be there. Its funny what people say when i say im thinking about studying in Colombia. Those who have been there say great, those who havent say "are you crazy that place is too dangerous" anyway i ll soon for my own eyes.
Merida, Venezuela first then 3 months in Colombia. thanks for the advice

OK.. OK... you are right... but who want to leave its own "western cosmopolitan city" behind and reach another "western cosmopolitan city"? Not really a big change!
Yes.. Bogota is the ONLY city in Colombia with real Night Life... it has bohemian, gay, celebrity and whatever bar you may like, but is that really what a foreign citizen is looking for? Maybe yes? It's just a matter of taste.
