Stupid questions concerning Spanish subtitles

1. I don't have cable TV

2. My TV is old school (only has cable-ready hookup)

Questions:

Can I buy a cheap (newer?) TV that will allow me to display Spanish subtitles for regular network programs?

Is that done thru Closed Captioning only, or is there something else?

What is "SAP" and how does it work? Do I need cable for that?

SAP means Secondary Audio Program. This means that a separate audio track can be heard using this setting. However, most programs do not include an SAP track. The Simpsons typically has SAP audio. Also, some news broadcasts may have it.

As far as captions go...
Although multiple caption feeds can be transmitted, this is rarely done. I don't think many shows carry separate spanish captioning. I am sure some exist, but they are probably few and far between.

You can find... ... Spanish subtitles for SOME programs under the CC3 caption. Since your T.V. is old school, I doubt you have that option.

Also there are some shows like "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "Friends" who have SAP audio. These shows usually show if they have it available at the beginning of the broadcast.

Those weren't stupid questions at all, Looking4Wife. Some good responses too.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

I just thought of... ... another show that has Spanish subtitles. If you choose the CC1 option to be on at all times for ABC, whatever shows they have with subtitles will automatically be aired with them. Ex. "America's Funniest Home Videos". Also, "Desperate Housewives" and I believe "Grey's Anatomy" have a SAP track with Spanish. HBO has several shows with this option as well. But ABC definitely is starting to do this since they know they have a big Spanish speaking audience.
