Studying Spanish

Hello everyone

I speak some Spanish, and am considering coming to Latin America to study intensively for a month or so. I have seen the website of the Escuela de Español Nueva Lengua in Cartagena.. http://www.nuevalengua.com/... which looks very promising, and I love the idea of spending time in this beautiful city (and beautiful country.)

So: can anyone recommend this school? Or any other in Colombia?

As for the accent/ dialect. I learnt my Spanish in Argentina: just how different is the Spanish in Colombia? How myuch more beautiful?!

Gracias

Seems good I do not know particularly the school in Cartagena, but it seems pretty well located in the city. But I can say the school in Bogotá is in one of the best universities in the country, which in my opinion is a very good reference.

Nueva Lengua Hi. I attended this school in Cartagena for a few weeks. I guess I'll call it "OK". Not great, but not awful. Certainly Cartagena is a great place to visit, and this school is easy to get to. But... There are other Spanish schools there (though they may be difficult to find on the web). There is a Berlitz there, too, and they should be easy to read about since Berlitz is a big international corporation. And of course private tutors are plentiful in Cartagena.

Nueva Lengua in Bogota N.L. Bogota campus is located WAY far outside of the city, so I would hesitate to recommend it, even if the school is good. Re. your question about accent, the accent in Cartagena is very strong and difficult to understand at times. It's your basic Carribean accent where they swallow all the "s"s. I doubt, however, that the teachers at any reputable language school in Cartagena have strong Costeño accents but the people in the street will.

Thanks everybody.

So -- so far -- it seems that if I study in Cartagena I will be too busy enjoying the city to learn much! Which is good because I won't be understood anywhere other than Cartagena anyway!!

bhill: if possible, could you expand on the idea of private tutors. What should I expect to pay? And does anyone have any tutors they can recommend?

glacierdaz: If you had to choose: Bogota or Cartagena?

muchas gracias again, everyone (see: my Sp[anish is already getting better!)

Bogota or Cartagena I really liked the Universidad de la Sabana. It is one of the nicest Universities I had ever been to (including here in Canada). It is quite a ways north of the city, but the commute is always an adventure ( in a good way). I found it a little bit easier to study because you were not battling the heat of Cartagena. I would say the campus population would be 5000 - 8000 students. Instructors were great. Lunch at the campus would set you back about 5000 Pesos
(about 2.50 Canadian Dollars) - so cheap !!! I only spent a few days studying in Cartagena....the campus was nice as well. The handouts and curriculum varied a bit from place to place as well. Hope that helps.
