studying at la javeriana? Hi, Miguel

Well it's not very difficult to enroll in la Javeriana as long as you comply with the admission requirements, for graduate studies obviously you need an undergraduate degree that has to be validated by the Colombian authorities (not such a big deal if your degree was obtained in a Western country and properly translated and certified). Obviously you need to be fluent in Spanish (which I don't know if you are since your message was in English) and to some extent prove your knowledge of English (unless you can prove yourself as a native speaker).

In which field do you want to pursue your studies? In business administration? Also remember the validation of your degree in Colombia depends entirely on the curricula unless a bi-national agreement has been established as it is the case of Colombia-France or Colombia-Netherlands. As far USA is concerned even when there are several institutions dealing with the conversion of the corresponding diplomas there's no reciprocal agreement. Please note that the higher education system is based on the old European university system (already abolished in the EU) and very different to the USA, for example in Colombia there's no such a thing as liberal arts education or major/minors.

If you want to opt for la Javeriana you also have to decide if you want to study for a master's degree or for a certificate/diploma in something more specific they offer; that might affect the admission requirements and also the tuition fees which in general are anywhere between COP$2'000.000 and COP$7'000.000 per semester (700-2400USD).

I personally would advise you to look up further into CESA (a very prestigious business school) and Universidad de los Andes. That's as far as executive education is concerned.

If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask.

hi Miguel

Well it's not as easy as you might think, there're a few things you should bear in mind:

1. The recognition of your degree relies entirely upon the judgement of the Colombian authorities that don't seem to be very competent unless you're pursuing a non-degree programme.

2. The difficulties of this recognition strive on which kind of higher education institution did you attend to? Community College? College? College? University? Also which kind of degree did you pursue? general or honours? Was it liberal arts or pre-professional (I assume it was liberal arts)?

3. I think you would have much of an easier way buy trying Los Andes, contact their Office of International Education (they're far more useful than Javeriana's), I used to know some girls who worked there. If you intend to complete a master's degree you need to comply with specific requirements within the field of knowledge you want to pursue and your curriculum must provide clear evidence.

4. It's very difficult to compare a BA to a Colombian degree because of the general education character of American education. They might not by any means require you to start your degree from scratch (and don't let them do it, it makes no sense) but in Los Andes you could actually take a top-up program with certain courses to complement your education and then proceed onto the "maestria" or the International Masters.

Cheers
