Student or Work Visa??

Hi, i've got a friend from the US, that is helping me do some remodeling in colombia. He's also a student there. He's getting close to his 6 months as a tourist and would like to get either a student or work visa, since he's doing both..i think he could go either way, no?????.... Any help is greatly appreciated...
