Street map of Medellin?

I was in Colombia recently and I could not find any street maps of Medellin or any other city in Colombia. Does anyone know if maps are available? They seem to be impossible to find. Thanks.

This is a decent map of Bogota (shows estratos and in general, the major streets as well):

They said I couldn't play football I was too small / They say I couldn't play basketball I wasn't tall / They say I couldn't play baseball at all / And now everyday of my life I ball.

Cosmoguias publishes "mapas touristicos" of many cities including Medellin. You can contact them at cosmoguias at hotmail.com

Try the papelerias. There is one in Medellin centro near the Hotel Botero Plaza that has a great selection. I bought a wall-sized laminated map there. It is behind Hotel Nutibarra from Botero Plaza.

As tomtom33 says many papelerias sell them.

There is a proper map shop in one of the plazas down town, it has all differant type of maps of Colombia, printed version and on CDs etc, its in the Plaza with the rail engine, with a coffee tables around one side of the rail engine, this Plaza has mostly goverment buildings in it, its opposite the plaza with the large amount of coloumns that are supopsed to be lit up.

Sorry I really remember the names of the places I go to really, but I expect somebody else will know the name of the Plaza from my description, actually its not far from where tomtom33 lives, so he might know the name.

Hola gogopher

As many posters mention, book and stationary stores sell Medellin Street Maps, or check Google Maps.

On www.medellininfo.com, under the FACTS button are a dozen maps, of which two are Medellin Street Maps. They can be increased to 150% size, to show blocks and streets, but individual street names are to small to see. One of the street maps was delineated by drivers at a Taxi Stand. A half dozen drivers used a light blue magic marker to show areas in Medellin which they considered to be SAFE AREAS-locations where visitors walking, should be safe. Of course, there are many others as well.

Good Luck,

Jim

The inhabitants of Medellin seldom use maps because the streets are laid as Calles (running east and west) and Carreras (running north and south) which are numbered south to north and east to west. Most US cities have street names so without a map you can't tell where you are or where you need to go. From a street address in Medellin you can tell exactly where it is. Salt Lake City's street system goes by the same principle.

You can order street maps of Medellin and all the other cities at www.omnimap.com

Go to http://www.omnimap.com/catalog/int/columbia.htm for the exact link.

The maps are made by a company called Cartur. You can check them out at www.mapascartur.com

But yeah, I've found they're not always easy to find in bookstores down there, and the kiosks or street vendors tend to have the less complete touristic maps.

el colombiano used to sell maps...their offices are down on the main street below the exito towards envigado. call em.

too, downtown, at the corner of la playa and oriental behind the huge bronze sculpture by betancur...the big building with the airlines offices there; inside is an office of something for the promotion of medellin. if they don't have em...they'll know who does. another thought, i used to see the venders on the street, oriental, (ave poblado) between poblado and envigado. also, ask in the papelarias y librerias.

gogopher, I was in the exact same predicament as you. I could not find any street maps of Medellin when I was there. I often like to study them, helps me mentally grasp the layout of a city. I didn't need one in the end, I just figured it out from the numbering calle system (as explained by John_stark).

Apparently if you go to Pueblito Paisa on top of the hill they give out maps for free. Every time I went they were out, but I'm sure if you go they'll have some more. Try there, it's free!
