Stop Over in Bogota ... need help. Thanks

Hello All,

I was estatic to find that I got a direct flight from Toronto to Bogota (I've had my issues with the INS with American connections) but I may have trouble connecting to Medellin. I think my flight arrives too late to get a flight to Medellin the same night. I am going to fly my fiance out to meet me in Bogota to fly with me back to Medellin.

A couple questions:

1. What is a good hotel in Bogota for a "stop over". As close as I can get to the ol'USA Best Western. Just a bed, in a safe place, not too far from the airport. It can't be dive central, but I don't need a maid and breakfast either.

2. How late do flights go from Bogota to Medellin (Friday night)? (This is a "lazy" question as my fiance could find this out, but she is working 48 hours a week with no car, so I would hope to save her time by getting an answer here)

3. Is it cheaper if the hotel hears a Colombian on the phone to make the reservation? Will I get ripped off to some extent if I book the room speaking English with a N.American Credit Card? Is haggling for a price OK?

4. If we have to stay in Bogota, I would hope to spend the day there touring (like many Colombians, she doesn't get out of her city very often, and I would love to see Bogota)... the problem is, I will have some luggage with me, too much to lug around... is there lockers or storage at the Bogota airport that is trustworthy and/or affordable? Any suggestions?

Any help would be, as always, greatly appreciated....

Dave

didnt know/ there is plenty of Motels near by the airport.

the thing with motels in colombia is that are bit different from the one in united states...

since you will be seeing your honey and you will not wonder arround bogota, you can check in in one of those motels that are specially made for couples... somenthing more of a love hotels, you check in ,no front desk, no bell boy, the taxi gets you right inside your room, there is jacuzzi, channel on the tv with X rated movies, mirrors on the walls, ceiling, and an ambience of love, off course cheaper than a regualr hotel for 2 it happens to be very close to the airport... there are plenty of them close to the airport... around 6 or 7... i mean close very close... that area is called alamos. but the bad thing is you can not go out for a walk. you call a cab next day and leave.
your girlfriend might not like the idea. but is an idea.
they are called Motel, remeber M for couples and H for regular guest.

Don´t go to "Motels" in Colombia, they aren´t really motels, they´re places for people to have sex, not to sleep over.
Having said that, here are your answers:
1. there´s a good hotel near the airport called Forte Travelodge Capital, minutes from the airport.
2. I think the latest flight to Medellin departs around 10 pm but I´m not sure.
3. I don´t think so, but you may try, but usually they won´t budge in price.
4. No, sorry, you´ll have to pay a room at a hotel, it´s safer.

Airport hotels Dave, if you plan on spending some time in Bogota, don't stay near the airport. It's the most boring part of town. Just take a cab to the Zona Rosa or to Candelaria and stay there. If all you're looking for is a crash pad near the airport before leaving on an early flight, call the places suggested above.

We haven't seen each other in 2 months, so we'll probably get all that over with in the cab or the airport bathroom!!

Thanks for the suggestions. I may be able to catch the last flight afterall, but I'm not sure. If not, I'll try the decent hotel near the airport.

Thanks again

Dave

You probably already know this but.... You know, probably, that the flight to Medellin leaves from Puente Aereo, not El Dorado? So you have to clear immigration, customs and then get on a shuttle bus to a totally different airport. Makes the connections a little tougher.

Dave, you’re one crazy Canadian. You‘re really going to nail your lovely paisa girlfriend in the cab or in the airport bathroom, that’s wild. I prefer those motels. My favorite motel in Barranquilla is called “Culiadero by the hour” exactly as written and is got hourly rates. The mattress is like those blue pads that you throw on the floor to exercise on, with no sheet or pillow just a big white thick napkin type cover, much like the one in the doctor’s office that is pulled down and tear with each patient. The problem with that is that after the first roll the paper is gone and your sweaty back gets glue to damn plastic and when you walk to the bathroom you’re completely naked except for that pad stuck to your back. But don’t worry, most times people are too stupid drunk to even notice,

I'll get there, when I get there!

Is this always true, Mr. Hollywood? I seem to recall taking an Aerorepublica flight from El Dorado to Rio Negro.

The Puente Aereo Terminal The Puente Aereo terminal is used primarily for Avianca's flights for the Medellin-Cali route, some other domestic flights as well as some foreign air cargo flights. You would be well advise to check the assigned departure terminal prior to arrival at the airport. There is sometimes confusion between the terminals so you better to be sure of which one you must use. The sinage leaves a lot of unanswered questions and there are many exceptions to the common rule on which flight leave from which terminal.

Dunno I'm not sure it's always true, but I think it's true more often than not. His ticket should say.

The funny thing about Puente Aereo and El Dorado is that they're really the same airport (meaning the planes take off land on the same runway) but they're totally different terminals and names.

utopiacowboy says on Aug 30, 2004, 12:19:

You're right - they are right next to each other. That's why I wasn't exactly sure if it was El Dorado or not.

Stop Over 1. Cheaper hotels, near the airport is the Hotel de la Feria www.hotelesestelar.com , or in downtown is hotel Bacata or Dann Colonial, or in the north side Dann Norte or Andes Plaza. Since you are arriving Friday evening traffic would not be a problem on Saturday to continue your journey and taxis are very cheap.

2. Aerorepublica and West have flights until 8.30 in the evening, Avianca last flight at 10, no idea about Satena. All of Avianca´s domestic flights leave from the Puente Aereo, you can recheck within the customs area and an internal bus will take you to the Puente Aereo terminal. If you are meeting your girlfriend in Bogota to continue together to Medellin in Avianca, you can go to the Avianca desk in the main terminal check in there and then go to the gates in the domestic terminal go through security and take the internal bus to the Puente Aereo. Saves you on a taxi ride. All others leave from the domestic pier on the main terminal, including SAM which is an Avianca subsidiary.

3. You can book most hotels on line, but sometimes you can get a better deal locally, ask your girlfriend to quote a price and then you can compare.

4. Yes there is a luggage storage area in the airport itself, it is just next to the domestic arrivals exit on the main terminal, it is not expensive.

Anywhere, anytime, anyhow.... its all good my friend. I've only kicked her out of bed once! And that was so we could do it on the floor. (and being a canuck, and I can do it with mitts and boots on!)

I'm going to get married to her this trip, so it might be last time that its really fun.... hell, I'll do it on the plane to Medellin... After the engagement ring I gave her, she'll be difficult to satisfy...

LOL!

Thanks for all the advice... She knows the airport well, she flew from the US to Bogota, and connected at the same airport within 45 minutes of landing (and she bought the Bogota-Medellin ticket with cash)...she told me how it was two different airports in the same locations, and she had to go from one to the other... Toronto is the same way, Terminal 1, 2, and 3 are diffent buildings that have a shuttle bus running between them, and I get to leave from terminal one which means no American INS (who are located in Canada, at the airport...one word for those fellows...."ASSHOLES!")

I am going to email her your posts (severly edited of course.... else I'll never have fun!!) and I'll let her handle it.

Thanks again!.... only a few more weeks as a single man.... its been fun!

Dave, Dave, Dave, it's not the end, it's the beginning. All I can say is, it gets better and better. Let me tell you - there is no better feeling than knowing that the woman you are the hottest for is your wife! If I could pick any woman on the planet to be in the sack with, she is the one I would pick - and this is after being married for a year.

Just thought I'd add something The flight from Bogota to Medellin is probably too short, even for a "quick one" - it may say 1 hr on your itinerary but the time spent actually in the air is about 20 mins, so by the time the Fasten Seat Belts signs have been switched off, they come round straight away with their trolley laden with Tutti Fruttis and by the time they've removed it (ie the gangway is clear), it's time to fasten those seat belts again for landing in Rionegro......sorry to disappoint...

Also, try not to land in Rionegro too late as, I'm sure your fiancee will be aware, the road down to the city is not the most savoury late at night. I would recommend staying at the Hotel Las Lomas right by the airport, it's very nice and comfortable and you will have a far better time reuniting with your fiancee there than in the airport/bathroom!

Roncita says on Sep 1, 2004, 06:04:

ps should have said - Las Lomas is at Rionegro airport so you can land in Medellin late and then head down to the city the next day. Just a thought anyway.

RONCITA OR ANYBODY ELSE: DO YOU THINK IT'S SAFE Do you think it's safe to take a taxi from Las Lomas Hotel to El Poblado/Intercontinental Hotel during the daytime. I'll be accompanied by my gringo boyfriend and obviously have security concerns.

Roncita says on Sep 1, 2004, 08:05:

Yes you should have no problems getting from Las Lomas to the Intercontinental/Poblado by taxi during the day. It's just at night that it's not always safe as that road can get very quiet.

Talk about paranoids. Yes, it is good to exercise common sense but let's not get carried away. I have frequently taken the road from the airport in Rio Negro to Medellin as late as midnight and I have never had any problems. It has to be one of the most heavily guarded roads in Colombia! Why would you be too worried to even take a cab from Las Lomas Hotel to the city in the middle of the day, Jelsaad?

utopiacowboy - I've taken that road back late at night many times as well and (touch wood) haven't had problems but my husband and his friends always say it's better not to travel too late there as it is a very quiet road (esp the stretch between the airport and the roundabout with the turn-off to Retiro) and muggings by gangs have been reported in the past. Or so say my Colombian friends.

20 minutes... no problem! I've always considered it a race to see who climaxes first... and yes, I'm undefeated!!

LOL!

My fiance said that she flew to Botogta from the US, swicthed terminals at the same airport, and flew to Medellin in the "downtown" airport...(I forget the name). Is this not much safer than the J.M Cordova airport? I'm getting confused...

Her father will pick me up, and his Renault looks extemely bad (if it was a horse, you'd have to shoot it) do you really think I will have problems??

Why would I do anything after I've finished? When you drive home from work, and get to your house, do you keep driving? Of course not, your home! Why would you keep driving around and around for??

Oh boy... this is getting out of hand, I've been joking about all this anyhow... Like my novia says about me "he's not a thoroughbred, but he's a thourough breeder!"

I have to apologize about my toilet mouth here, but its been over 2 months with no action... not thinking straight if you know what I mean.
