famsearch says on Nov 30, 2006, 23:22: so far so good... i've managed to adapt to my wife's cooking, good honest colombian fare. sancochos, arepas, and such. she has already reorganized the kitchen to her liking. she's doing her best to acquire more and more english, and we have a few good laughs along the way. on our first walk around a local lake, she got to see something not seen in colombia, a squirrel. my brother told her that they were basically rats with furry tails. as far as the temperatures here in minnesota go, she thought i was kidding when i told her that it was -11c this morning, until she saw the thermometer. on one of her calls home, i believe that she called it puta fria, but i could be wrong. she was wondering when she will get to see snow, but i think that that will be this weekend. she told my sis in law that it was odd to see the sun so bright, yet it's so cold out. she said that if the sun were that bright in medellin, people would get fried. but here, the sun is more of a decoration, than a source of heat. other than that, it's been one hell of a lot of fun. dan 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

utopiacowboy says on Dec 1, 2006, 10:58: Yes, and sometimes what you "learn" is just plain wrong. There are several species of dwarf squirrels as well as other types native to Colombia. My wife was quite familiar with squirrels before she came here. Of course you seldom see wild animals in Colombia at all because the locals eat them all. Just kidding on that last point although they do eat a LOT of the native animals.... Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

famsearch says on Dec 1, 2006, 16:42: i don't know about mini squirrels.... but the only wildlife i saw in colombia were the turkeys in the front courtyard next to the mother in law's house, and the occasional horse, and burro pulled cart. then again, there were those damned roosters that everyone in the barrio seemed to have. dan 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Derek says on Dec 1, 2006, 17:08: Utop you were not kidding! Most everything in Colombia that´s edible has been hunted to or practicly to extinction.

Robert Jorge says on Dec 1, 2006, 20:14: Not the monkeys. There are lots of them 30 miles into the Llano. Almost every visit to a finca outside of Villavo or Acacias gave me views of micos jumping through the trees. But I guess they wouldn't be very good eating. --"I believe in making the world safe for our children. litost says on Dec 4, 2006, 08:16: Yes, unfortunately it is very rare to see wild animals in most colombian cities. Why, I don't know really but I figure that with such enormously varied and rich countryside why would they dwell in polluted and overrun cities? Of course there are squirrels in Colombia, I remember an uncle took us on a hunting trip many years ago in the mountains near Belen de Umbria (Risaralda) but it was mission impossible.
