Stereo Typing Colombians and Gringos

I have noticed when push comes to shove, a angry Gringo will usally stereo type
a Colombian. It does not matter if it is over a business deal, or having to wait in line
to get a new phone or cable service , or being jealous of his chicas past Colombiano. The gringos usally get mad and says rude things about Colombian culture traits and work business ethics and how Colombian men treat their women.

Also Colombians are very quick to assume all Gringos are rich and like George Bush. They also believe most Gringos are in Colombia to score women or drugs.
They also think Gringos owe them something , and many local stores and vendors will charge them a higher price than they would a fellow Colombian.

There many fine Gringos and many fine Colombians, and many Gringos are a great asset to Colombia. In four short years look how much Pablado in Medellin has came to be.

Your forgot to write down that Colombains assume that Gringos (Whites or rednecks from United States) are as well dirty, fat, liars, cynics, yankees and hoaxers. The thing about rich gringos is just coming from lower Colombian Class who think any one who gets more than US500.00 a month is rich. But it is just an stereo type, I have met some gringos who are not like that!.

This is just spanglish, please do not correct me

How about that Myth Colombians have that all Americans have a Dollar tree(Ben Franklin $100 denomination if you please) in their Back Yards? LOL

yummyj says on Mar 4, 2008, 07:27:

Almost all people who have no way defending themselves have no alternative except to go on the offensive. That is why a gringo, for example, will turn around and insult a COlombian. The gringo cannot simply defend himself with attacking the Colombian.

To completely contradict myself, I feel that a 3rd world country has every right to defend themselves by attacking the, supposed, high level country. If the USA, for example, is so good and they think they are the best country in the world, we need to point out their faults and show them that are not, in fact, close to as good as they think they are. Whereas the 3rd world country is supposed to have problems.

Odd, if a 3rd world country is so bad, why would gringos, for example, go there? And only an idiot would go to that 3rd world country and complain about it. Don't like it? STAY HOME!

tomtom33 says on Mar 4, 2008, 07:31:

The US doesn't need anyone to point out our faults. We are quite capable of doing that all by ourselves. Of course other opinions are always welcome.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean? Besides buying some apartments and the odd business, and financing some boob jobs, what have Americans contributed to Poblado? My family has lived there for a long time and it has been nice as long as I can remember.

I think that there is a lot more racist tenedancies towards gringos from Colombians simply due to a lack of contact. Colombians think that all gringos are like the ones they see on TV. The biggest misconception is that Gringos in Colombia have a lot of money. Most of the travelers that go to Colombia aren't so well off.

My girlfriend is always telling people - no he doesn't have a lot of money, he is a taxi driver. He's normal like us.

On the other hand Gringos do have more money than your average Colombian and tend to treat their women better. Gringos tend to work harder and that's probably why they are so grumpy.

Steriotypes seldom come out of nowhere. There is almost always some truth in there, you just have to realise that everyone is different yet shaped by their culture and we are all bound together by roughly the same human desires.

Chriscan,

So Colombians think that gringos are automatically rich and that makes us Colombians racist? Please!

How about many gringos labeling all Colombians as drug dealers, guerrillas, etc? Isn't that a much worse stereotype?

HERE'S SIMON!!!!

ColombianoGringo says on Mar 4, 2008, 15:02:

I have found that many Colombians, especially those outside of the highest estratos, tend to believe that most people in the US have a lot of money. The perception seems to be that since salaries are generally so much higher in the US, we must have a great deal of expendable income.

I wouldn't consider this to be racist in the least. I am 100% Colombian, despite living in the US, and some of my friends and family have the same impression about me, so it clearly doesn't have anything to do with race or ethnicity.

What they often don't realize is that the cost of living is also considerably higher in the US. In my case, it is true that I have a lot of expendable income, but going to Colombia five or six times a year and living the way I like has a way of eating into that. I wish some of my Colombian friends and family were a little more understanding of this. I am sometimes made to feel like a cheapskate when I choose to be frugal. Oh well.

ColombianoGringo says on Mar 4, 2008, 15:04:

On the other hand, most Americans definitely tend to have some extremely negative and offensive stereotypes about Colombians.
