stay in Colombia, or return?

What is the consensus for those ex-pats living in Colombia - stay for the long haul, or return to your country of origin? And what is the reason for your choice? If you married a local, would you stay?

Met a bogotana online in Oct. Visited her in January. I went to Bogota not knowing what to expect, but after visiting it I'm convinced it's the most underrated place I've ever seen. I'm going back in August for six weeks, and am seriously considering moving there. I'm a professional musician, and the USA sucks for music these days.

stay in Colombia, or return? As those who have help (thank you) know I am stupid in love with Cathalina from Medellin. With my poor Spanish and no job/business in Colombia, I would move there in a heart beat if she would say "venga".

I also stayed in Santa Ana and like the tranquility. I could live there just give me a job!

What is the question; I visited many country and the US is my blood, I am Yankee from my birth in New York but I would be happy be embrace another country (though I thought it would be Brazil or Dominican Republic). Colombia is where my heart is from and I will become Colombian for her, why would I want to leave?

interesting! Alright, the consensus seems to be that staying in Colombia for the long haul is a good possibility.

I just wonder about the western amenities we are accustomed to, but perhaps Colombia already has most of them - and a whole lot of other fine qualities?

i don't know if columbus ever got to new york, but i made it to colombia and i came and went.

one has to periodically, if they're from somewhere else, just to keep their sanity.

i'm not saying that it isn't great in colombia (or at lest that's my experience for many years) but it's colombia and we--all of us foreigners--are from other lands. it's this 'other land ness' in our blood that makes us return and recharge, dry out, whatever, every now and then.

the first time i went there lasted 2 1/2 years. that was a toughie. i took a couple of weekend breaks and flew home for 3-4 days just to keep my head screwed on straight. i started not speaking spanish, and in those days there wasn't any other foreigners in medellin, much less english speaking ones. so for me it was a bit tough. i lived through it and now, i can go a couple of years without returning to birthland for a recharge. and downstream, i'll probably make it for many years without needing it. it just took me time.

everybody's probably different on that one.

Other landness? Personally I'd be happy if they dropped a massive nuke on my home town and turned it to fused glass!! I'm DEFINITELY different on that one. I feel I fit in better in South America than in North America (emotionally, NOT physically, physically I have a hard time squeezing past the turnstile of the buseta!)

I think the biggest thing I would miss about the US down in Colombia is the lack of readily available hot water. They typically wash all their dishes and clothes in cold water down there. You can get an attachment for the shower nozzle that heats the water, but they are a pain in the ass and dangerous. I got a nice shock from one in the DR once; woke up on the shower floor 2 seconds later!

what about ... things like North American movies on video? Or North American music? Do they have video stores down there that stock films in English? Yes, I love Latin music too, but would I be able to buy a Mike Oldfield CD? Yes, these could be thought of as little things, but hey, they count too.

a lot of ppl in BOG listen to American music, rock, jazz, blues and stuff. You may have a harder time finding gospel, R&B, etc.
