Statistics on Internet Use in Colombia

Colombia - Number of Internet users rises // TELECOMPAPER AMERICAS (WAS RDSL AMERICAS) , July 20, 2005

The number of Internet users in Colombia was 773,339 at end-2004, down from 818,853 in June 2004, according to a report from CRT, telecoms regulator, reports La Republica. However, there are more broadband users, which suggests an upgrade in technology and better access to fast connections. The number of dial-up Internet users saw an 11 percent fall, to 646,234 from 727,561. The number of broadband plans rose to 127,049 from 91,292.

The Colombians I know who have internet...I wouldn't blame them for giving up on it. 56K dial-up is probably more like 14K, because the connections starts and stops constantly. Downloading large files is impossible.

I work for a software company that makes antispyware, and they won't sell many in Colombia, because few will be able to download it.

My wife used to use dial-up in Medellin all the time. It was more reliable than the various dirtball ISPs I had here.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

Pete E I doubt the number of actual internet users is down, its probably continuing on up as everywhere else in the world. What is down here is internet ACCOUNTS,particularly dial up.Dial up internet in Colombia,at least the one offered by the phone company in Cali is very slow and also very expensive. You pay per use time. There are no unlimited local calling plans Colombia. You pay per miniute even if you are calling next door.My brother in law was racking up $100 plus
before they took his computer away.
OK,how they might be connecting now.Internet cable an example. With an internet cable you can hook up several hard wire connections,I have 5,plus almost an unlimited number of wireless connections. This can be limited to how far the wireless will transmit. So I bet there are LOTS of cases where one cable connection is split to many users.
With a cable connection you pay by megabites used.I have an unlimited plan.It costs 465,000 pesos a month, about $200,but its fast and we could probably have a whole neighborhood running off of it.The cable company tells people this unlimited service is not available, but I have it.A tech that works for them helped me get it.WE used like 15 thousand megs in May.It could have cost us 1,500,000 pesos without the unlimited plan.
My direct TV,a dish system has had brochures out for 18 months talking about internet service, but they still don't actually have it.In Medellin I understand there is a DSl type dial up service that is alot cheaper, like 130,000 pesos a month.
Internet use down?I don't think so.People are just getting creative.

Pete, the number of accounts is increasing but the accounts... are changing from dial-up to broadband. And, as you say, the number of users is increasing even more given that several people can hook into one wi-fi account.
