Starting a Bar in medellin

Hello you all,

I was wondering if somebody could infrom me about the possiblities to start up a (lounge) bar in Medellin. Are there possibilities to rent an excisting place (how about the costs). Are there a lot of problems concerning criminality/police, how about visa, tax and other paper work. Is there a website or contact person were I can find an overview with possible locations for rent or sale? Is there a source were I can find information I need.

In basic, Is it possible for a Dutch guy with a lot of bar/ disco experience to started up a bar in Medellin.

Thanks an greetings,

Michel

Be clear on what you want and are looking for becuase there are bar licenses and there are discotecque licenses. Hole in the wall bar with 10-12 small tables on la 33, needing full update/upgrade should run you around 18-20 millones. Nicer lounge bar like Citrus on la 33, nicely updated with a lot more tables, more like 35 millones. (note that they will ASK 40 and 80 millones respectively so just assume they are asking double what its worth). go to EL Colombiano.com classified ads have many listed especially on sundays. Theres a shitload of paperwork that my fingers wont be able to write the book in a matter of minutes.

Open a bar in Centro where all the drunks are. You want customers 7 days a week. I bet those bars in Centro make way more money than the ones in Poblado. In Poblado, nobody goes out Sun-Thur.

morphus - great insight, and very true! I have spent a lot of time between Barranquilla and Medellin. In both places, I would definitely focus on the locals and economical areas rather than places similar to Poblado if opening a bar!

good point morphus... and a hole in the wall off sales/liquoria too for that bar. Wonder what the cost of a dive bar in centro goes for?

I'm not greedy I just want a lot.

i was walking around Lleras last week with the misses at around 8pm and there were a lot of bars with not one person in them... even the new sports bar up there only had three people in it including the barman. i remember when lleras only had 3-5 bars. that was only like six years ago. You had to get to the only in bar, Zoo, by five pm just to get a table. that bar has now changed its name several times and is absolutely dead. now theres like a hundred bars up there.. you´re going to have to offer something good to make some money.. still give it a go, whats the worst that could happen

Too true. I was amazed how dead absolutely dead Lleras was during the week. Massive places without one single customer...

sabaneta seems to be the buzz now but I'd go where the hard core boozers go. open up a little liqoria/store and sell shots of guardo and that other cheap hooch... anybody remember the name of that liver killer?

I'm not greedy I just want a lot.

Always wondered how many of the bars in p Lleres make any money. I like the Scotish bar; but it is forever virtually empty. I am not sure why that bar has never caught on as similar types in Bogota are roaring seccess stories. Same with the English type bar down the road.

Then you have Thaico, Haicarumba and El Rojo who rake it in. I think that one of the highest earning bars in P Lleres would be the hole in the wall type bar that is up the top of the park in the middle road out to Calle 10 (Donde Aquellos).

I could see with the increased back packers trudging through Medellin how an Irish type bar would work near to P lleres.

Hello and thanks for all the posts,

I would like to create a bit upclass bar.I think somewhere in the Poblado area.
So European standard and believe safety aswell. But If I read your posts than you could also be closed Sunday till Wensday. So where are all these people going in that time. They must be having a chat or drink somewhere?

Amazing is that criminality seems not realy a concern. Is there just one party to pay a protection fee, or do you have a few a month standing in your bar?

What about rent in the Poblado area? Is it measured m2 or on the location.
How about the staff. Are they paid officialy with taxes or in cash and how much does a experiances bar person makes an hour/day.

Greetings and a lot of thanks for all your friendly answers,

Michel

Not many people go out Sun to Wed. The ones that do concentrate in Thaico, Haicurumba and maybe El Rojo. You will need to capture their market! A great concept I saw in Quito was the Coffee Tree. It is a cafe that is open 24 hrs and get lots of people formeals, drinking and coffee. On Sunday it is still full with a band out the front. Has more of a backpacker crowd to prop it up though.

i don't know where you plan your haunt, but i would think real seriously about going up against the high rollers in lleras. they are an old, blood thirsty crowd, to whom, no tactic is beyond consideration...that includes contracts.

pick a place, a space away from these folks, where you still have access to crowds and nice players...too, a place where you can grow old with out threat. these folks are 'dead' serious and can deliver what they threaten. take that to the bank. if you don't want to play in a game under those kind of rules, keep your distance.

i know, toneloc...just tryin to scare the dude. i mean, what's one more fatality to the pile. what was it the wise man said. "...go it alone? the path is strewn with the bones of those who tried." thus he. if michael takes the time to hang for a year and get dry behind the ears and really get a feel for the place, he'll do fine and grow old in good health. after 19 years, i've seen and known folks who've been popped for a whole lot less. that friendly paisa style also spawned the likes of pablo and hundreds more of his ilk. business men and travellers should never lose sight of that fact.
