SSA Check Follow-Up

As a follow-up to my previous post regarding the SSA screw up and me stuck with a paper check in Colombia, I finally threw in the towel and FEDEX'ed the check to my son in the states to deposit in my account. I talked with Bancolombia and they said they would open an account but would not accept the check. They also said that I could only open a savings account. I will have to be here for a year to open a checking account. Banco de Bogota said they are not opening any accounts for extranjeros regardless of the paperwork they possess. It's a little difficult to do business here. I have a cedula, visa and Colombian company documents. I wonder how other ex-pats have managed to function here. Que dolor.

Yes, I agree a checking account is not obligatory. I'm just thinking interms of business in the US. I'll have to adjust.
Gator, are you saying that the branches are more or less independent and I could get different results with others? If this is true, does anybody have any suggestions as ti which branches in the MDE are would be the most flexible for business with extranjeros?
