Spirt air from Bogota to FLL

Has anybody flown the new Spirit Air route from Bogota to Ft. Lauderdale? I just booked my grandfather on that flight, and I'm trying to find information for him. IF anybody has flown w/ Spirit, give me any tips you might have. Thanks in advance.

What kind of fare did he obtain if I may ask? I am anxious to see if Avianca will start Miami San Andres direct since Spirit is supposed to do it 3 times a week starting in 2009. Maybe America Airlines?

Maybe this Spirit flight is why American has the $78 fare? Competition will do that you know!

If you fly American Airlines in September your fare will be around $300, Spirit is not my first choice for flying those discount airlines cut back on everything to keep prices low, who knows if the maintenance on those planes is up to regulation.

I prefer American as well but Spirit is flying A-320's which are a lot younger than AA MD 80's and those A-300 s. American should have parked those A-300s in the late 90's for 767 or even Airbus 330. Avianca just received a 330 I think.

I hope AA can buy some more Boeing 737-800 and 900's and some 787 dreamliners. If oil prices drop?

I got BOG-FLL roundtrip for $261!! But then, you have to pay per checked-in bag, and if you wish to reserve a seat in advance, it's a few bucks more. I payed $20 in order to reserve isle seats near the front. Of course you don't have to reserve seats if you don't mind sitting wherever they put you.

Has anybody flown Spirit out of Bogota? I need info to pass on to my gramps.

That Lauderdale - Cartagena route sounds very appealing, during the off season, it seems to be as low as $250. How was the flight?

I'll post info on this flight very soon... the reason I ask is because my granfather is scared that he'll show up at El Dorado without any boarding pass (this is an eticket) and they won't let him in the airport. He has flown Avianca many times with etickets, but he always visits the downtown avianca office and has them print out a document which he uses to prove he has a ticket? Does anybody know what you need to have to be admited into the airport?

I flew the FLL-CTG flight in May and do it again a week from Friday. The only problem I had was not having a printed receipt with me to prove that I pre-paid for checked bags. While the lady at the counter in FLL was gracious enough to go to a back office to verify that I had pre-paid, I did not have such luck on my return flight out of CTG. I had to pay again for my checked-bags to get them boarded in CTG. I will not make that mistake again.

I had no problem checking-in at FLL or CTG without a pre-printed boarding pass. As a previous poster stated, just have your printed eTicket confirmation and proper passport.

I made the mistake of pre-paying for my bags after I booked the ticket and not printing that separate receipt. For my flight next week I pre-paid for my checked bag at the same time with the ticket so it shows-up on my printed eTicket receipt.

One thing to remember is that if your grandfather wants a soft drink, water or a snack, etc., they are not complimentary and he'll need to have a credit/debit card with him as they do not accept cash.

Another thing to note, if you're like me and have a habit of cutting it close in arriving at the airport, I probably wouldn't push it too much at FLL. The line for international flights was fairly long for my flight in May (was the day after Mother's Day) and the airport person that I asked indicated that they are usually long on Thursday-Friday outbound flights as well.

For the price I paid for travelling in May and the cost of the ticket next week, I'm hard-pressed to complain (it was my fault for not having the printed receipt and I understand having to pay for a coke and snack).

Hope your grandfather has a great trip and enjoys his visit!

Hola Sanandressi,

Don't worry about the MD-80's. Very, very good airplane. I prefer these over any Airbus! I am a pilot myself, my uncle just retired from AA. He also instructed in the DC-10's and MD-80's. His favorite is the MD-80. My cousin flies the A-320......AA might be a little more expensive to fly, but then again how mush is our a.. worth!?

Happy traveling to all!!!!!!!!

Go to AirSafe.com and you can get the facts. You can get all flight safety reports including the number of passenger miles flown, take offs and landings, fatality rates, number of passangers on board, number of passengers killed etc lots of US Government data from FAA and NSTB.
Here are the fatality rates for major airlines including those flying to/from Colombia. Spirit not listed.
Shown as worst to best. 1970 to 2005
American 13
United 11
US Airways 9
Delta 7
Continental 5
Avianca 4

Worst American
Best Avianca

So to answer your question Pirate2late if you want to save your butt fly Avianca at 4 and not American at 13.

El Piloto says on Jul 22, 2008, 13:50:

Ronaldo those are not fatality RATES they are simply the number of events. Pretty meaningless data unless you compare the number of flights (or hours) racked up by the airlines during the time they had those events.

If Airsafe.com's data on fatal events and flights flown is, in fact, accurate, then Avianca is roughly 6 times as dangerous as American because Avianca's fatal event rate per million departures is 3.15 versus AA's rate per million departures of 0.52

Damn I am jealous all flights to Bogota have excellent prices even with American/Avianca/Lan out of MIA...

Medellin more difficult...but was able to get Avianca four R/T tickets in September and October for 388.00 each but one leg has to fly thru Bogota and the other direct out of MDE...

Medellin needs more options to drive the price down which is Spirit is doing with Bogota and Cartegena..
