I am booking flights to Bogota for November...I have seen many posts about airlines, and reasons to love,(not so much), and hate, (a lot) many different carriers...I have seen a few posts and comments discussing Spirit airline's awesome prices, and a few comments about their less than impressive customer service.
My question, for those who have flown on them, did you feel ok about the experience? Problems with cancelled flights? Lost Luggage? Potential for being stranded at Eldorado Airport? etc...
I am in the Northwest US of A, and their flights out of LAX or Los Vegas are not all that inexpensive, compared to Continental, Mexicana, Copa, and even Avianca, but if one can book a cheap flight through hotwire, or priceline, (or Southwest), to Miami and catch Spirit to Colombia, It all of a sudden becomes a relatively inexpensive way to fly to Colombia; it just chews up alot of time.
Also, My wife flew, on Copa not too long ago and didn't feel the experience was all that bad.. She did have some seat assignment issues in Panama City, where they didn't have her assigned and was not going to let her continue on to Bogota, but they resolved it rather quickly..

Papi de Alejo says on Sep 3, 2008, 05:01: I just booked for Sep 17. Will report back as well. When I attended college in Buffalo, NY, I used to fly often on an airline called People's Express. They used to be priced a little above the busses. They didn't offer much. But for a seat and a quick flight from Newark to Buffalo you couldn't beat the price $49. You got used to not being offered a drink or inflight music or movies. But why would you need that for a 45 min flight. PdA 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

august says on Sep 3, 2008, 14:37: I just flew back to NYC last week with Spirit through Cartagena. Pretty amazing how they tried to collect a 38 dollar exit tax - in cash - on behalf of the airport, an airport "timbre" they call it. Well I don't know what sort of poor but happy travelers have 80,000 pesos in effectivo in their pocket on the way to their plane, but I know I didn't (DAS, in fact, had just finished cleaning out my bank account for a one week expired visa - don't do that). My saddest puppy dog face convinced them to waive the tax, but everyone else was paying it. Pretty lame that they don't just include that in the price of the ticket. They did not, however, loose any bags, going or coming, much to my amazement. Not even a complementary soda on the flight though. Boo to being at the will of the cheapest airline.

I remember I had to toss one of those when I was transiting through San Juan, Puerto Rico. It was too early in the morning or I would have just swigged the whole bottle right there before I tossed it. PdA 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

OneHappyBoy says on Sep 4, 2008, 19:20: Doesn't AA have a lot of add on fees for luggage, preferred sitting etc?

Papi de Alejo says on Sep 4, 2008, 22:03: I used to fly AA often. They did not have the kind of fees that Spirit has. They have recently added the luggage fee, and as far as I know, they only charge after the first piece. I have heard that many airlines are looking at charging for all pieces of luggage, but I'm not sure if AA is one of them. They do not charge for preferred seating. If I'm wrong, you will certainly hear differently from others. PdA 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

OneHappyBoy says on Sep 4, 2008, 22:56: I appreciate the comments....The cost for the main line carriers, out of the US, are getting very expensive flying to Colombia... I have also noted, here lately, that Mexicana, LAX to Bogota, has been very reasonable..($657=all fees)
