Spirit Air Offering Flights to Colombia

Spirit Air is trying to get its Colombian License to do flights from the US to Colombia. This is very very good, as Spirit will keep the other carriers prices low. My guess is this could be set up by the end of the year! If anyone else has heard anything...please let me know!

Spirit is already flying to Lima...Peru..I heard...This can be excellent for competition...for Bogota...

Really don't see them flying to Medellin or Cali for awhile...Medellin is a tough area because there is only Copa,American, and Avianca..same as Cali..

They have to be careful remember United when they started there S.American routes from MIA and failed within one year...

AA and Avianca really need the competition. Spirit just started to San Jose de la Costa Rica from Fort Lauderdale this April and it has really made American's prices quite a bit lower. Last summer couldn't get anything to SJO for less than $460. This summer $338 plus I even found one for $158 RT (taxes included) and another for $188 RT but they were gone in a day. Spirit has specials all the time which helps keep all the airlines lower. I have really noticed a sharp increase in Colombian airfares compared to last year.

As much as I like CO the SJO tickets are about half or more less.

Next month Spirit Air RT to Medellin non-stop from FLL! The market is already there.

No, Cali also has nonstops from Houston on Continental.

Yes you can fly directly to Fort Lauderdale. They compete with MIA.

Any ideas on how to track Spirit's application "to get its Colombian License" to fly into Colombia? I'd like to try and gauge when and where they'll be offering flights.

Reason being, I have a friend wants to come down in Februrary 2008, originating in Houston and arriving Bogota. Looking for something cheaper than the $550 we've found. Any other ideas to cut that cost down appreciated!

Originating in Houston and arriving in Bogota, round trip .... $550 is a pretty good, normal price. To beat that, fly out of Miami and gamble on a special price through Aero Republica, Avianca, AA, or LAN. There are rates as low as $350 round trip if you get lucky and shop around, out of Miami. But, it is obviously not worth it if Houston is the convenient place to arrive for you. It will be interesting to see what the Spirit flights do to the ticket prices of the competition.
