no offense But I saw Carlos Vives on some spanish talk show and thought he was totally goofy. I didn't actually know who he was until just now. I've been watching spanish television in an attempt to learn spanish. anyway again i'm glad you all enjoy him and his music. i just did not care for him that much though i will admit to not have heard anything of his except the song he sang on the show.

and none taken but what did you mean by "goofy"? I've been listening to Carlos Vives for many years now, and am really looking forward to getting my hands on his latest cd. Besides, I think he's got a winsome personality and is not bad looking either.
Cheers,
Desi

He's authentic He does come off pretty goofy, I mean the guy is over 40 and jumps around with his hair in beads and cut shorts... no offense either, it's cool to see people who can keep their inner child alive and kicking, he's lucky his job allows him that.

you know... "goofy!" like litost said, the dreads and the hopping around. for some reason i didn't think he was pulling it off. i guess i just thought his performance was kind of silly. again, i'm glad you like him and i really can't comment on his music though i didn't care much for that song. am respectful of anyone who can get up and sing in front of people and are creative. but the other thing is i didn't really find him all that attractive either :) (IMHO) i'm obviously in the minority however as apparently he is successful at what he does.

beads and cut-offs when you're past forty? That's exactly why I think he's great! He is joyful, authentic, very Colombian (?) at the same time. Should he be wearing a guayabera and black trousers and look like a Bogotanian bookkeeper instead?

Desi

Exacto, Desi Funny thread here...the CD is solid and doing well. With regards to him being "goofy", "jumping around", etc...this may be breaking news to you, but musicians have been known to be goofy AND jump around. For you gringos who are not familiar with vallenato, just think Colombian zydeco. This cd has lots of vallenato, rock n roll, reggae influences.

ColombianoX i certainly was not dissing on your boy carlos vives. it was just my opinion that he looked kind of funny hopping around and stuff. and it didn't have anything to do with him being over 40. i seriously think it was the way he was hopping (and the dreads). i would expect a latino man to move his body a little better (less hopping and more hip action?). quite honestly on that talk show that i saw him on he seemed like a really nice and genuine guy. so for you all i will definitely give him a listen. but don't be mad if i come back and say i didn't like it. i wouldn't be offended if you all thought Radiohead sucked.

Heat,

Alright, sorry if I came off a little aggressive, it's just that I tend to be a little defensive about criticism towards people like Carlos Vives, who are always showing the world the best things about Colombia. The man is really nice, one time he appeared at a mall in Miami to sign autographs and after doing so for three hours (during which I stood in line for that whole time!), he still was kind enough to also let me take a picture with him.

I would definitely recommend the 'Clasicos de la Provincia' album for the first-time Vives listener, it's one of his earliest and it's a classic. The album that came out after that, 'La Tierra del Olvido', is also great. To tell you the truth, there isn't one album of his that I don't like. I once heard that a Carlos Vives song is a must at any latin party.

hey Heat, it sounds like we have stuff in common... we both think Carlos Vives looks goofy (again... no offense!!!) and we like Radiohead. Do you by any chance also like Milan Kundera and talking endlessly over a cup of coffee?

The Unbearable Lightness of Being is one of my favorite books Litost! and coffee and chatting - yep, i like to do both. we do have some things in common. but the biggest one of course is colombia! speaking of which, my very, very, favorite author is the amazing Gabriel Garcia Marquez. if you're ever in town let me know as there is a cafe a few doors down from my flat.

ColombianoX- thanks for the tips. i will check those out and let you know. i did read a little about him and i can see how you would get defensive. he does sound like a really nice fellow and well he's colombian so he couldn't be all bad!

later,
heat

heat, I will hold you to that invitation!

BTW, I don't remember in which city you live... I know you've mentioned it before. London? Sure hope to go there sometime in the near future, all I've seen of it are Heathrow and Gatwick airports on a connection from Paris to Bogota. I'm sure there's lot more interesting stuff to see.

Gabo is a master indeed, but I slightly favor Kundera's stripping of the human soul and mind.

Never been OK San Francisco it is! Heard good things about the town, plus the weather must be a lot nicer than the famously grey-old London...

Not a lot of colombians in that corner of the States I reckon?
