Has the price of milk gone up 22% the last 6 weeks en Colombia like it has here in the states? Read where this is indirectly due to the increased cost of gas. The corn normally used to feed the moooooo cows is now a hot commodity also for ethanol production thus the increase in milk prices. A half gallon of this precious commodity (more expensive than gas itself) has gone from $2.09 for a half gallon at the end of June here in south Florida to $2.55/half gal. as of yesterday! I'm going to have to start pouring beer on my cereal.
Milk is such a staple that it is a real good gauge of the rate of true inflation. Hope it is not that bad in Colombia.

Tinto (Moderator) says on Aug 7, 2007, 07:41: The wholesale price of milk in the U.S. has nearly doubled in the last year from $11-12 per hundred weight to around $20, so it's no surprise that dairy products are increasing in price. I don't know what's happening with Colombia prices but they had a drought earlier this year that affected a number of agricultural products. And to the extent they feed their cows **some** imported corn and soybean meal (Rubito says things are grass-fed, and that's mostly correct, but they still use some grain), Colombian dairy producers may be faced with sharply higher feed costs.

summer83 says on Aug 7, 2007, 10:10: you know it's such bs when they say milk is goin up because of gas going up. First gas has no reason to be this high anyway. And milk is going up because simply ...it can.

houstongal says on Aug 7, 2007, 15:08: Summer...the link to gas is really the ETHANOL that is being put into gas (in place of MTBE I believe). Ethanol is made from corn. Therefore the demand for corn has increased, and likewise the price of corn. I read that the price of corn tortillas in Mexico has risen because there's less corn available. And corn (i.e., grain) is used to feed cows, cattle, pigs, chickens, etc. as others note. As esanch36 aptly put it, this is a lesson in economics. And BTW, corn is being used in more and more things (other than food or as feed). Because of the high cost of petroleum, corn is being used to make plastics more and more (plus it makes the plastics biodegradable). So I don't believe the price of corn is going to be heading down anytime soon. There's a link between all these things.

Robert Jorge says on Aug 7, 2007, 18:33: Yesterday, Destin, FL. Walmart. 1 gallon off-brand 2% milk, $4.19. 1 lb. skirt steak $8.50. I believe T-Bone type steaks were in the $12 per lb range. Avacado: .99 cents for 1 avacado the size of a large egg. Chicken has doubled in price this year. I always keep on the look-out, and sometimes I am able to score whole chickens for .80 cents a lb. 2 years ago, .67 cents a lb was normal. Now, $1.50 is common. I am to the point that it is difficult for me to afford to eat. It is like a flashback of the ole' college years. Ramen noodles have been rock-steady in price for 15 years now.

houstongal says on Aug 7, 2007, 18:57: i believe you're right vic....i know that brazil uses sugar to produce their ethanol. but then, when you think about how much MORE corn the US produces than sugar you come to the realization as to why we went the corn route.
