Spanish Schools in Medellin

Good Morning everybody!

This is my first time posting and only recently discovered this website.

I was just wondering if anyone knew of any Spanish for foreigners courses available in Medellin? I already know about Nueva Lingua and EAFIT but I was looking for anymore.

My plan is to head to Colombia Mid June till Mid September and I managed to get some reasonably cheap flights from London to Bogota (£590) with Delta.

Any other advice for a newie to South America? Hopefully, I'll be staying with friends so they can tell me where not to wonder during the twilight hours!

Cheers

Conor

The great thing about Medellin is.... it is WONDERFUL and you can wonder at twilight or at any hour. I wondered as I wandered the streets of Medellin at night without any problem. Medellin has a great downtown. We used to play tag in Parque Bolivar at night! There are theaters in downtown I walked to at night. I lived on Avenida Oriental so I could walk to restaurants, salsa clubs, banks, parks, universities, bookstores, etc. Don't miss the beautiful library Biblioteca Central Comfenalco

I have walked all over that city in barrios like La America, Belen, Boston, Buenos Aires, etc. and even in "dangerous" neighborhoods like Manrique, Kennedy, Aranjuez, Robledo, etc. and others near the Medellin River that were basically "invasions" or what are called "tugurios", very poor housing, but everywhere, whether rich or poor, they invited me in and shared their genuine hospitality.

I don't recommend you go anywhere without being accompanied by someone who either lives there or knows where the safe places are.

About learning Spanish. When you get there you can check out more language schools. Some language schools will do a special Spanish intensive course if you can round up a few students to make a class worthwhile for them.

Of course, the best way to learn Spanish is just by listening and trying to converse. People are very friendly. I learned a lot of new vocabulary at "futbol" games (in the stadium you hear lots of interesting vocabulary), from car mechanics, bus passengers (I took the buses a lot, sometimes hanging from the entrance door when the buses were full), taxi drivers, grocery clerks, and at cultural events. Just keep making mistakes and keep laughing at yourself till one day you find you get it right. Instead of saying "huh" they understand!

Studying in Spanish at Antioquia University I have just come back from Colombia, and I am thinking about moving there for an extended period of time in the future to study Spanish and become fluent. I was just wondering if anybody knows if it is possible for foreigners to study Spanish at Antioquia public university in Medellin. I visited the campus and really liked the people and the atmosphere. If anyone has any info on studying at this university i would greatly appreciate it.
