Spanish Movies
There was another thread about learning Spanish & alot of the posts suggested Spanish TV & movies... there's a Colombian news broadcast I watch on SCOLA, but it comes on a las dos y media en la manana. *I was trying to say 230 in the morning* jaja.
So does anyone know of any good Spanish movies out there that are easy for Gringos/as to understand? Any recommendations appreciated.
Gracias!

Are there movies you can just rent from good old Blockbuster or is there another venue to get Spanish movies ? (not necessarily movies from Spain or Latin America, just movies in Spanish... though I would rather watch an authentic one.)

Classic Movies in Miami On Calle Ocho in Miami there are two old time single screen movie houses that run classical spanish movies on Sat(?) and Sundays. No English subtitles-only in Espanol. A Unique experience as the movie theater ambience matches the classical theme of the movie.

Nubia Yol? Has anyone seen this one? If so, what's it like, and is is something the family could watch?
El Norte doesn't have 100% Spanish, but I thought that one was great. It's hard to find now, though.

Yep, you can find movies at Blockbuster... I was one of those folks that posted on the other thread about watching movies to improve Spanish.
I've been able to find many movies in Spanish at the Blockbuster around the corner from me, but sometimes if there are a number of Blockbusters within the same city, one will have a larger selecion than others...just ask and the clerks will be able to tell you.
I've watched all kinds of movies in Spanish, ranging from "Goonies", Harry Potter, Proof of Life, and Maria Full of Grace, to "Y tu mama tambien" (I DO NOT recommend that movie unless you're looking for incest and vulgarity). When you're browsing at the video store, flip the DVD case over and it will list which languages they have audio of and which are subtitled.
If you're looking for "authentic" movies in Spanish, I also found a bunch on Netflix under the International section. I think you can browse through there even w/o being a member, but I could be wrong.
Hope that helps!

What a great movie! What incest? I don't remember any incest in that movie. I love this movie, those two horny kids reminded me of my cousins in Cali. Watching it brought back a lot of good memories of great trips to Cali. I guess you could say the movie was "vulgar", but not any more than the "American Pie" movies, and it's a lot more profound than those movies. It was also a critics' favorite here in the US.
My favorite colombian movies are 'La Estrategia del Caracol' and 'Bolivar Soy Yo', but I've never seen them in any Blockbuster.

Great list, Kernow, but you left out Brazilian movies. My wife does not have any problem understanding the Portugese and I use the English subtitles. For example, "City of God" is a great movie.

I saw that movie lat week Utopia, I agree great movie. My local library has quite a few foreign DVDs so I can save my pennies.
This week I have watched a Norwegian film called "Buddy", a French film called "The Swimming Pool", a Cuban film "Lista de Espera" and still have the following to see; Cuban film "Azucar Amarga" & Brazilian film "Man of the Year".
Had to replace my DVD player I wore the thing out.
In a good foreign film I find myself so engrossed in the film that even when I am reading subtitles I am doing so without realizing. I swear I am speaking Hindi from watching Bollywood flix.

Yes, she is good with Italian too. We sometimes watch Italian movies, "Life is Beautiful" is a recent example, and she understands the dialogue very well. With French, no matter if the movie is from Canada, like "The Barbarian Invasions" or from France, she cannot understand any of it. I don't know what it is about French that makes it indecipherable to her.

Raleigh1590, where are you located?
I am in Florida so Spanish language movies aren't hard to find at Blockbuster but it seems as though most locals that speak Spanish prefer Hollywood films with dubbed Spanish rather than a good foreign film. I am the opposite.
I have discovered that my local public library has many foreign DVDs perhaps yours does too?
You can also check on eBay for bargains, I have bought some good foreign movies cheap.

Nueba Yol I finally got to see this movie. It's wonderful, and something you could probably watch with the whole family (there are a few cuss words---sh! at ---in the English subtitles, but I didn't see all the subtitles, so caveat emptor...but I thought the Spanish was fairly tame). It's about a Dominican guy who finally gets to come to "Nueba Yol" and finds out it's not all it's cracked up to be. Very heartwarming film.
