Somebody please help this Bogota university

i've been remotely involved with a nasty situation at a bogota university for quite sometime. a 'professor' there has been causing problems for students and administrators.

they said he was educated in the states so i asked if i could do a little investigative reporting. (and you know i like figuring out conspiracies)

turns out, his Ph.D or literally his Ed.D is from this place:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belford_University

i'm trying to explain to them what a 'diploma mill' is....what non-accredited is.....that you just pay them $479 and they give you a degree 2 weeks later for life experience. i speak F plus spanish and they speak D plus english

they keep telling me that they checked and he has a legitimate degree from the united states so now we're at an impass. they feel that if the university exists, then it must be ok, nothing more.

is there a colombian from the states that is billingual and has a very good understanding of usa culture and spanish that can define 'diploma mill' in a sentence or two?

i'm frustrated about not being able to communicate .......and i'm getting all riled up and my blood pressure is out wack trying to explain in broken spanish. they probably don't have diploma mills in colombia.

it's not fair to the students that they're being taught by a guy with a this kind of a degree and as far as i'm concerned..... no degree.

Belford University is an organization offering online unaccredited degrees for "life experience". The organization maintains a post office box in Humble, Texas, but its certificates are mailed from the United Arab Emirates.[1]

That first sentence from wikipedia is just amazing. Most notably unaccredited degrees , my word did he even pass a class or does have a transcript?

G'loid--amazing they insist this is a legit university but they would not accept transfer coursework of a Nurse friend of mine here in Miami who is a Legit Col citizen as well as U of Miami graduate(See the today post below yours to the person looking for info on how difficult it is for someone to revalidate their MD coursework in the USA and work in Colombia)

Here is my stab at this. Let me know if you need anything else.

GL, Make sure to get the full link for that second one. The display code for PBH truncates it a bit and drops off the last letter.

Strange. Given the love that Colombian institutions have for forms, seals, stamps, credentials, Doctor this, Notaria that - no one did a simple Google check to see if the guy's university was legit.

You can also use the term "fábrica de diplomas". They use the word fábrica to describe puppy mills, fábrica de cachorros.

True. "Fabrica de Diplomas" is probably a better term. Come to think of it, I have actually heard that term used before. I was being a bit too literal.

I went ahead and edited my original post to use this term instead. I must admit that it's nice to abuse my mod powers by editing a post past it's expire time.

Now all I have to do is delete Diana's post to make it look like I came up with the correct term ;)

seriously, experience is important.........and it's justified as a way of learning.

but an education tests you, takes you to a higher problem solving level, and teaches you how to think under pressure and deadlines.

but these diploma mllls are nothing more than just buying a piece of paper.

LilaM says on Dec 4, 2008, 13:05:

Yes GL that is true experience is very important, the thing is if its related to health, a doctor can´t be a "empírico" he has to study, it depends on the field.

in a theoretical world........i believe anyone should be able to become anything they want to be........no govt certification for anything. ayn rand/supply and demand/no govt, etc.

there is a doctor shortage in the usa created by the american medical association. they certify the schools......so that doctors can keep busy and make $500K a year minimum. mantequila makes double that.

Hard to grasp the criteria Colombia uses in evaluating Diplomas, as I mentioned earlier, they give a lot of weight to a Mail Order Diploma and discount Legit Universities like the U of Miami here in Florida. Crazy!

------------------------------------------
But see, that's the problem. It's not really a "diploma chiviado" per se. It's still a diploma in something, but it's not a license or an actual degree. Like me getting a diploma or certificate for having completed a course in... wine tasting for example. It still says that I took the class and received the "diploma" but that doesn't make me an expert in wine tasting or a wine connoisseur.

Gringoloid, wake up and smell the perico. I have a lecturing post at one of the world's top ten universities. If your daddy wants to make a cash donation for a new carpet in the foyer then sure as hell you can get a totally undeserved degree too for just sitting around picking your arse for 3 years.
