SOMBREO VUELTIAO

So there I was, stepping outta my building in Manhattan, NYC on a beautiful Sunday morning. The sky is a bright blue, sprinkled with pretty fluffy white clouds, the temperature is a delightful 68 degrees, a classic September day. You could feel autumn just around the corner.
Anyways as I stepped out I see a familiar sight which is very dear to my heart, but was not sure if it was in fact what I thought it was.
Across my street coming outta the brownstones is an older couple, late 60's or early 70’s, your common NYC liberal looking types, caucasian, well traveled, well read, peace loving, conservation minded and of course very smart. The guy looked like Woody Allen.
I walk up my block towards Broadway so is the lady, leaving her husband in front of the building sweeping autumn leaves off the sidewalk. As I got closer I see that what I think I saw was in fact what I thought it was.
Now if you make any sense of what I just said, please explain it to me.
This lady had on her head a SOMBRERO VUELTIAO and I don’t have a single doubt cus through out my life I’ve seen hundreds of thousands and I know a fokin sombreo vueltiao when I see one.
I was tempted to ask the nice lady where she got such a stunning sombrero, but then she might think I was coming on to her, and the last thing I need is a 70 something year old white lady stalking me around my neighborhood. I have this incredible effect on middle aged and older liberal NYC women, in other words I’m an old broad magnet.

I see them here on special Colombian holidays and I also saw three at the airport in Miami on my way back.

My last short stay in Colombia, I really wanted to get a real sombrero vueltiao to bring back. After keeping my eyes out for one during my stay in Villavo, I conclude it is impossible to find the real thing in the llano. I am sure they are easier to find in Bogota, but I didn't have the time to go hat shopping. But if you want a cowboy hat in Colombia, Villavo is the place. I did score a miniature plains harp and a ron caldas poncho my last trip down.

So there I was, around 4 pm yesterday heading home after work and crossing busy Broadway, in Manhattan. This place is always congested with both people and traffic. I look to my right and there she is, the same older lady I saw yesterday wearing el sombrero vueltio,, She was waiting to cross Broadway too but this time she had another less colorful straw hat, also very popular during carnivals in Curramba.
You know what, she did not look so bad, she even looked a few years younger maybe around 68, and was dressed very elegant in black pants, blouse and high heels. Maybe she was coming back from a doctor’s appointment or funeral.
Under the influence of lots of drugs and booze, I’ll do her and she might even pay me for a change.

Guys, you want a costeña eating outta your hands, learn every word to “tu eres la Reina‿ and use those lines as often as possible.
I like to call my women “Reina‿ always tell her “tu ere mi reina!‿
Mona, Is hard to believe but I get my inspirations from hookers. If you’re not familiar with hooker establishments in Barranquilla here is a quick description.
As soon as you walk in, you get padded down for weapons. You sit and along the bar area and seated in tables around you are groups of sexy dressed girls seated in a way where you see lots of legs and breast. You find the one you like and make eye contact. With a slight eye gesture you invite her to your table. As soon as she comes over a waitress shows up and takes your order, most girls order wine, which really Jugo de mora.
How do I know? I always ask for a sip just to make sure. Now here’s were the chit starts.
She’ll tell you how handsome and how desirable you are, and you in return think of the most romantic chit you could think off.
Is all a big fantasy and as long as you know this it gets a lot easier to bull chit and make up all kind of weird romantic and sexual stuff. What we’re doing is creating una pelicula (a movie) and that’s where most of vallenato song writers get their inspiration from.
The ending is always the same you pay and she goes home, next day you do another production or otra pelicula with a different love interest.

I love the words to La Reina and it has universal appeal to women as it sends the message the even though there are many more beautiful women in the world than oneself, the person singing it to you recognizes how unique and beautiful you are in your own way and values you more than even the most gorgeous woman, very crafty.

Thanks for filling me in on the inspiration of vallenatos singer/songwriter's but I am going to forget it asap so I can continue enjoying them so much ;-)
