Solo travel to Cartagena in January

So I have to admit that I know very little about Colombia--though this site is immensely helpful. But I am planning a 2-week stay there in order to study Spanish. So for those of you in the know:

Do you think that the first 2 weeks of January would be a good time to go to Cartagena? Do you expect it will be overrun by tourists like myself?

Also, do you feel that 2 weeks is *too* long a time to stay there, and that I should consider travelling to other cities?

Please let me know what you think, and thanks--
Emily

Ctg The first week of January there will be a lot of tourists in Ctg, but those tourists will be nearly all Colombian.
The second week things should start to quite down.

If you have somewhere to stay and like to party, its a very good time to go.

You could spend a week in Ctg and a week in Santa Marta/Rodedero. This would be my option - depends what you like.

To study Spanish? Cartagena would be my last choice to study spanish!! The spanish that they speak there is terrible.(what I have been told) I have been there with a native colombian friend from cali and she couldn't understand some of the people....and it's not just a different accent either. The advise that I have recieved is that Bogota or Cali speak spanish in it's best form or clarity.

Now, if you want to go there for the women.....sorry....you won't find very many good looking women that live in cartagena.
Oh.......you will find and see a lot of beautiful women there but they come from other cities like bogota,Medelin and cali.

You know! there is another thing about cartagena....and I wonder if someonelse has ever had this problem. I alway get sick in my stomach after about 6 or 7 days and I end up staying in my hotel room for several days trying to get better. I have tried taking anti-bacteria pills in advance.....but I still get sick. The pharmacy is all set to give you a shot....and it will help for a while.

Well, anyway, as you can see....cartagena is really not my most favorite city in colombia but I still like it and I still want to go there ocasionally but just not for too long.

You know! this is just my opinion so I hope that I don't get flamed too bad...OK

Dear Emily Please forgive my statements about the women. I should have noticed that you are a woman and you would not be going to cartagena for that reason. Please forgive my carlessness about that!

Yag I saw a pretty girl in Ctg, she was a tourist.

Just thought I would repeat the joke, that I have heard several times in Medellin, although I don't really agree with it.

ejl2005 the Spanish on the coast is not spoken very well as Yag states compared with some other parts of Colombia.

Going to Colombia I was planning on going to Cartagena in January as well. After hearing all of this though, im not so sure thats a good idea. I have heard that its a pretty safe and nice city. But if the girls arent hot, whats the use? What do you all recommend?

Cartagena is a great city... Hey there! I've been to Cartagena a couple of times in the past year and love it there, but if your purpose is to learn Spanish, I'd head to Bogota. Cartagenan Spanish or "Costen~o" as its refered to there is VERY different from Spanish in Bogota or any other Spanish speaking country I've been to...they eat certain sounds and talk so quickly that its even hard for other Colombians from different regions to understand them. However, its a lot of fun to learn their dialect and the culture there is very laid back and more Carribean than Bogota, which feels more like the US to me. I should also say though, that when I've been in Cartagena its been for work in the marginalized areas, so I haven't spent much time in areas like Boca Grande where the majority of tourists go.

Hope that helps!

Flyinrob13 that's the most stupid thing I've ever seen someone say.
There WILL be plenty of hot girls cause december and january, cartagena will be swarming with tourists from all over the place. The party there is awesome, I was there last year and everyday I arrived at my hotel at around 9am after partying all night, going to the casinos, etc...

oh, and about the topic, definitely not a place to learn spanish. Just go there if you wanna party a lot.
