Solo en Espanol

Sometimes when I read the posts in the Solo en Espanol forum, I wonder how many gringos (or other non-Colombians) are reading this stuff. For those of you who don't read it, any thread is about one of three topics: 1) How much better Colombia and Colombians are than everywhere and everyone else; 2) How horrible life is everywhere other than Colombia; 3) How ignorant, stupid, irritating (subtitute your favorite epitet here) gringos are; 4) How much better Colombian Spanish is than everywhere else. Anyone who did not know real Colombians in person or the country itself would grow to hate and despise Colombia and Colombians based on the threads in this forum. The posts remind me of nationalistic US citizens at their worst.

just looked at it You forgot also (5) where can I get my breasts enlarged and/or nose fixed, which I just read. :)

I have heard many late night semi-drunken conversations very similar in content. Basically, that Colombia is the Garden of Eden and (so-and-so insert name here) fell out of it by coming to the USA.

I don't take it seriously; people are just proud of where they come from, but do it in an un-PC way.

Sounds like payback to me! UtopiaCowboy,

This "friendly" forum is mostly about gringos badmouthing Colombia, so why should it surprise you if colombians get even?

HERE'S SIMON!!!!

utopiacowboy says on Apr 10, 2006, 15:06:

Caslug's right - The "Friendly" Talkzone is almost as bad. Which leads me to Simon's point. Is that how PBH should operate? With two forums one where the gringos talk trash about Colombia and another where the Colombians retaliate? It's not even a gringo vs. Colombian thing. The last straw for me was reading this total BS denigrating how Mexicans speak Spanish. My wife spent a month complaining about how Mexicans here spoke Spanish before she woke up and smelled the coffee. You are not going to make many friends or influence many people if you continually insist on insulting people from the largest Spanish-speaking nation on earth. Soon, the US will be the second largest Spanish-speaking nation and guess what kind of Spanish is predominant in the US? Get over it.

true I haven't read the spanish section in a while, but it can be really ignorant (the english part too, so relax). It is amazing what I read there. What gets me is that the gringos can say it, and it looks bad, but if a colombian talks about odd things, it is ok. Like the post, something like "Novia con mi primo" a loooong time back. All the responses, and there were many, were about how people in colombia have had sex with their own cousins, and that everyone said it was perfectly normal. A bunch of people said they dated their own cousins. I made a reference to it once in the english part and it was deleted.........

Every Spanish-speaking country i have ever stayed in... states that "their Spanish" is the best and the rest is "basura"!! including the Spaniards......Colombia is no exception, and the Mexican-Americans in California love their "Spanglish"....languages adapt and evolve whether one agrees with it or not.....

Just my opinion...

Hey, sometimes there is good stuff in Solo Español.... For example, Plátano just posted an interesting article about a really neat cultural event in Bogotá, the International Book Fair. This year many authors will be attending, including authors from the USA, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, etc. Colombia is a book loving nation and the Bogotá Book Fair is an event not to be missed.

I have attended six of them. Once I got to sit at the Nadaismo table and chat directly with none other than poet Jota Mario Arbeláez himself... what a treat!!!! (estaba yo en el puto cielo literario!!!!)

I love talking with Colombians because in general they are such cultured people... and I have found that to be true in both urban and rural areas. Fascinating people from whom we (gringos) can learn much.

UNESCO has designated six cities in the world as "WORLD BOOK CAPITALS" and Bogotá will be among the UNESCO-designated book-loving cities in 2007. Medellín also has a good book fair but is not included among the six world book capitals.

The 19th Bogotá International Book Fair is the "largest publishing event of its kind in Latin America" (that means larger than Argentina, larger than Chile, larger than Venezuela, etc...... COLOMBIA ROCKS!)

Bogotá, Colombia 22 04 2006 - 07 05 2006 The central theme of the 19th international book fair will be "The Role of Books in Education". This year's fair will pay tribute to six world book capitals: Madrid (Spain), Alexandria (Egypt), New Delhi (India), Antwerp (Belgium), Montréal (Canada) and Turin (Italy). Bogotá, will be designated book capital in 2007.

Again, I disagree with you! When I post in “Solo in Español is because the article or comment is in Spanish and I do not feel like going the extra mile and translating the article for an audience that claim to know the country and culture very well but cannot read in Spanish. Besides, I assume that many of native English speaker members have a Colombian mate and they could always check with them or they can easily post a question on pbh about what does the article mean.
I oppose some individuals who use PoorButHappy about Colombia to advertise another country or culture just because the individual or the family love China or live close to another country.
If I have to say something negative or derogatory about a person who does not know what heck he is talking about, usually when false and misleading information about Colombia is posted here, I would say it in the language he or she understands.

It is true the level of unbelievable cultural chauvinism on this site sometimes just stinks to high heaven. Lots of people seem to post here only to bitch about Colombia.

GIB I have TONS of Colombian friends here and I don't hear anybody bitching about Colombia. Most of them want to go back but are stuck here because of debts or immigration status or they simply want to save $10k or so so they don't go back empty-handed.

Once again your conclusion is very wrong. :-) Not that your wife and family aren't happy as well. Most Colombians are happy no matter where they are, it is just many would be happier in Colombia.

fo shizzle 2 centavos. I've recently become very close with a gringo who has a PhD in Spanish. He's studied the language for 24 years and is extremely fluent and is able to switch accents without missing a beat (PR, Mexican, Spain). He consults or does some mumbo jumbo for the Real Academia Espanola or whatever that thing is called. He has lived in every Spanish speaking country on the globe for at least 6 months. He is a total Spanish language nerd.

I had the opportunity to really pick his brain about the Spanish language and its differences among Spanish speaking countries. He has helped me greatly with a good deal of nuances....

For what it's worth he says that Colombian Spanish is easily the most formal, polite and grammatically correct of all the Spanish he has heard outside of Spain.

But he also tells me that there are Mexicans who's Spanish is perfect as well.

What does this all mean? That regardless of the country there will always be those that speak more eloquently and correct than others. Same here in the US - listen to an English professor at Yale and then listen to Snoop Dog.

But, as far as Spanish is concerned, for the most part, he's leaning towards Colombians in general and their Spanish as being the best in the Americas.

I have found that the Colombianos in the US that I have met who are happy here in the US are the ones who have been here for a great deal of time (20+ years) - most have grandkids here and not much else back home in the mother land.
