Model/actress Sofia Vergara has been called one of the sexiest women in the world, and has been romantically linked to several A-list Hollywood stars, including Enrique Iglesias, Jamie Foxx, Mark Wahlberg, P. Diddy and Tom Cruise. Sofia Margarita Vergara was born July 10, 1972 in Barranquilla, Colombia. Having attended a bilingual elementary school, she learned English early. She met her first boyfriend at age 14, and would eventually marry him. Together they had a son named Manolo, born in 1992, before splitting up. She studied dentistry for three years before she was discovered while walking on a Colombian beach, and got her start in a local Pepsi commercial. After working in Bogota for a short while, she eventually wound up in Miami, hosting the popular TV series "Fuera de Serie" (Out of This World) on Univision in 1995, and then her own weekly show, "Aque no te atreves" (I Dare You). By now a huge star in the Latin market, she got her first Hollywood role in Barry Sonnenfeld's Big Trouble. This led to a co-starring role in Chasing Papi, a rare Latin-centric comedy with a wide American release. 2005 promises to be a breakout year for the actress, with roles in the Mark Wahlberg film Four Brothers, and the animated film Robots

We watched "Four Brothers" last Friday and it was probably one of the worst movies I have ever seen, it was painfully bad. I just hope she comes up with something good because it seems like her bark is louder than her bite. She's been everywhere and can't seem to get it together and stand out like a Salma Hayek or even a Catalina Sandino.

Past her prime? What is she, an athlete?

Salma Hayek, who happens to be the same age as Halle Barry and Nicole Kidman, is still as gorgeous as ever!

Let's look a her filmography and I think there are some films missing above? Am I right?

I'm talking careerwise. Has Sofía Vergara been nominated for an Oscar yet? No. Is she known worldwide for her body of work, work being the key word here, as the others mentioned above? No. Has she produced movies that have been nominated for Oscars and even Emmys? No.

She needs to either get her stuff together or fire her agent and manager.

Here are couple of movies missing above: 7 Days (7 dias) (2007), Robots (2005)

Now, if you take a minute and a look at her filmography you will notice that Sofia Vergara is doing just great, one movie per year since 2002, damn that’s great record!! It’s a pretty good record for being a Latin woman from Colombia and for her skills to learn a new language so fast.
Now about her missing Oscars? She is doing perfect for being a minority actress, that’s coming from a country that has the reputation mostly about bad news. She’s doing great dealing with biased Spanish film industry or media in the states. As you probably know, in Hollywood sometimes it takes a looong time to get an Oscar, check out the former actors’ history.
Let’s wait until she lands in a film where she can earn an Oscar.

It is one of my favorite movies too Simon. But no, I didn't see it on blu ray. I would assume it isn't available in that format yet. Besides Lost Boys, I think From Dusk til Dawn is the only vampire movie I really enjoyed. I think the funniest dialog is at the beginning of the movie, where the Texas ranger stops at Jimmies World o Liquor, and gives the clerk a hard time for eating a microwave burrito. "You know that microwave food is only good for a hippy ... when he's high on weed."

Personally I don't think that Salma or Sophia are very good actresses. They look good, but for the most part the roles they have chosen are light, superficial and lack any real substance. They would be better catagorized as celebrities.

Meryl Streep is an actress. Gwenth Paltrow is an actress. When you watch women like them act, you forget who they are; as they totally assimilate themselves into their character.

Salma and Sophia are never in character, they are playing a role, and watching them "act" is in essence watching them play dress-up.

ColombianoGringo says on Mar 18, 2008, 16:02:

Salma is finally starting to go downhill. Now that she is past 40 and just had a kid, she is probably not going to get her beautiful figure back, but Pilates can sometimes work miracles.

On the other hand, Sofia is getting older and had a kid a while back, but she is still smokin' hot. Some Colombian women just age really well. I haven't seen this same trait amongst trigueña Mexican women with a body type like Salma. They usually just get fat as their body catches up with their boobs.

When I first saw Penelope in Spanish movies, she never did much for me, but I have to admit she has grown on me. Her sister looks like any even hotter version of Penelope.

As far as the Tom Cruise thing, I guess neither Sofia or Penelope were as good at being beards as Nicole Whatshername and Katie Holmes.

I think what bugs me about these actresses and I know I'll probably get crucified for this, is their accents. I cannot concentrate on what they are doing or saying for that matter when they're on screen, especially Penelope Cruz. It's so distracting and it bores me to death. I can tolerate Salma more than the others because she's a good actress and that helps. But the others need to find their niche somewhere else besides Hollywood. The sad thing is that most American audiences feel the same way and it will be extremely hard for them to do well in this industry.

Unfortunately, a large portion of US born Latin youths seem more worried about getting rims and bling instead of pursuing an education and a professional career. I had a really hard time finding quality US born Latinas. The professional ones who have their shit together often don't speak Spanish and that is a deal killer for me.
