So I am kinda of dissapointed of Queens and Roosevelt Avenue.

I went to NYC this past weekend had a great time. And of course I went to Queens. Well I have heard that Roosevelt Avenue was full of Colombian people, and Restaurants, and that almost all the businesses were Colombian. Well indeed there were Colombian businesses, restaurants and people, but they were outnumbered by Mexicans, and Ecuadorians. Still managed to find lots of goodies. Went to a Restaurant called Tierras Colombianas, food was good but I was expecting a little bit more.

I guess you don't like a little variety. Theres no shortage of Colombian restaurants or stores on Roosevelt ave. Its nice to be able to choose from Colombian, Mexican, Peruvian and Ecuadorian all on the same block. There is also 37th ave running parallel to Roosevelt ave with lots of Colombian stores. Did you go there?

minina says on Jun 10, 2008, 04:46:

Well, Ecuadorian and peruvian no so much. There were a lot more Mexicans and Mexican stores than any Colombian peruvian or ecuadorian combined. Have nothing against Mexicans, is just that we have plenty of Mexicans and plenty of Mexican stores throughout the US. So I don't really care for them much. As for 37 I did take a look at it, a little bit more Colombian but still.... See I was told by mum that a few years ago, businesses there were pretty much colombian.

DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS...

Its like Little Italy in New York City. You won't see many Italians outside of the restaurants. Just Mexicans....HA! There are a lot of Mexicans in New York City right now. A lot of the fast food Chinese restaurants had to combine their menus with Mexican food.

When I went to NY I stayed in Queens y the Roosevelt Ave & 64th St, I went to that same Restaurant Tierras Colombianas and the food was good better than the food you find here in Miami, but the funny thing is that I went to a fish market near the metro station owned by Asians and from the moment I went inside they kept asking do you need anything? do you want to buy something? even after I explained to them that I was new in the neighborhood and was looking around they looked at me like if I was going to steal a fish or shrimp in other words in my opinion the Asians are the most annoying people, I said this only in business not as a race I do not have anything against nobody.

Asians do that. And what the OP complains about the Mexicans taking over (not really true I think there were probably lots more Mexicans in NY than Colombians earlier on) - maybe the Irish aren't thrilled that the Colombians had taken over their neighborhod years ago? (and who did they take it from.

The mix is great.

Here are the facts:

Roosevelet Avenue is no longer full of colombians. The majority are now mexicans and ecuadorians. In Queens, Colombians have moved to 37th Avenue and Northern Blvd. Furthermore, Colombians for the most part have left Jackson Heights with all the migration from Mexico, Ecuador, Salvador, etc.

Colombians are now in Long Island, Westchester, New Jersey, Conneticut, etc.

When I lived in NY until 1991, there were a handful of Mexicans in Queens but I'm not surprised to see they've multiplied since then. I personally think it's a normal thing that's been happening all over the country.

And ietk, Colombians can be just as annoying as the Asians, maybe not in the US but try going to El Hueco or San Andrecito in Medellín. Those people are worse than anything I've ever seen. They'll call you over and over again, and even if you're looking at merchandise at one store, the people working at the next store or across from from it will keep calling you to get you to drop what you're holding so you can go look at what they have in theirs. We made the mistake of going there on December 23rd and it was chaotic, but as sick as it may sound I found it to be fun and very funny. I'd do it again for sure. =D

Oh I see, you mean they were all thinking you stole something because you didn't buy anything. That's annoying in a hilarious kind of way. But aren't most of them rude like that, not all of course because I've had Asian friends since I was a kid and they were not like that. But it's just funny to me that every time I go to a Chinese restaurant the waiter will only come out and say:

"What choo wahn?!"
"Well, hello I'd like the beef broccoli with egg drop soup please" "
"Drink!"
"Just a glass of water"

Then they leave and drop the food on the table when they get back. But I rarely get a hello how are you, my name is so and so and I'll be your waiter, can I get you started with a drink and an appetizer type of thing. All that stuff is funny to me now because I'm so used to it. I wonder if it's their culture since I've seen it at so many places.

bufalo says on Jun 11, 2008, 08:15:

I think a lot will come back when:

-the US economy rebounds (change of president to start)
-they realize there still aren't all that many jobs in their home countries
-they're used to new customs (people being on time, paying on time, etc)
-they geta bit bored because they're now used to real cities (for the one's who live in smaller ones)

I've seen more than one come back due to this. Right now they got some extra money and things look rough in the US, but it is temporary. They're going to loose money in the exchange rate too. Actually wouldn't NOW be the time to move to the US? (I'm no expert). I mean everything is up in Colombia, (so you'll get more than you paid for it), and the US has major problems (so prices are down or will be coming down), the exchange rate is better from Col to US, and then one can "ride the wave" as the US economy recuperates.

Just a thought.

It would be like buying property in Medellin or Cartagena a few years back (are you nuts?) and then selling it now.

I don't think we Colombians are that bad.
For example I know that Mexicans and Puerto Ricans can't stand each other (not all the time).
Well I met many people from Puerto Rico that are free loaders slackers, does it mean that all of them are like that. I don't think so.
Mexicans if you are a woman is better to keep your distance from them, they are nice as long as you don't let them get too comfortable around you. And don't let me even start with their parties, they get all drunk and end up killing each other with axes and machetes.
Dominicans, well almost everybody makes fun of them because of the way they talk , I've heard mexicans and puerto ricans saying they are too ignorant. Does it mean all of them are? I don't think so. As a matter offact I have met very intelligent cult people from Dominican Republican,
more so than most Puerto Ricans and Mexicans I have met.
It's all stereotypes. BS.
By the way modefoque you remind me of my aunt "Nena". She used to call my mom and my other aunts prostitutes, whores, and sluts, just because they had boyfriends or male friends and she didn't. She just has this personality and attitude that scares away any man.

Weekend in New York | Colombian Culture
A Fruit Shake, Then Shaking to the Beat of Cumbia

http://travel.nytimes.com/2007/05/20/travel/tmagazine/07well-cartagena... culture travel&st=nyt

Amigos de Colombia
Robert Caplin for The New York Times

IF you always put pineapple on your hamburgers, can identify lulo juice by color, consider vinegar to be a vital ingredient in salsa and can distinguish cumbia music from vallenato, you’re excused from a Colombian weekend in New York.

Otherwise, it is worth getting to know the ingredients and rhythms of one of the city’s biggest — and most under the radar — immigrant cultures.

At what cost have we ignored Colombians? Here’s one cost: $2.65 for a fig, cheese and caramel empanada at Empanada Mama in Hell’s Kitchen.

That’s one of the few Colombian outposts in Manhattan, the fancier sit-down Manhattan spinoff of Mama’s Empanadas, a chain of takeout shops in Queens (where the same empanada costs $1.50). The sliver of a restaurant in Hell’s Kitchen serves entrees as well, but the heart of the menu is the empanada section. Order from the corn flour empanadas — the traditionally Colombian style, and be sure to dump on the vinegary sauce known as ají. Empanada Mama also serves salpicón, a fruit punch/fruit salad combo that falls just barely into the beverage category.

There’s also a surprisingly traditional Colombian menu hidden in a Midtown restaurant with a definitively Mexican name: El Tequilazo. That’s because it’s long been Mexican, but a few years ago Colombian owners added a Colombian side to the menu, including a traditional country platter called the bandeja paisa, a huge plate of meat, rice, beans, plantains and fried pork rind.

Considering that Queens is the home to most things Colombian, it’s surprising that the most mainstream and (vaguely) upscale Colombian restaurant in the city is Bogota Latin Bistro, in very non-Colombian Park Slope, Brooklyn. Its waitresses don’t even all speak Spanish, a bold move. The menu integrates Colombian classics like ajiaco (a chicken and potato soup) and a great bandeja paisa with other more fancy-schmancy, pan-Latin-sounding dishes like chipotle corn-crusted salmon.

The bottomo line is that NY Colombian restaurants (in my opinion) are about quantity and not quality...

I remember years ago getting so excited when my parents would take us to Queens to eat Colombian food...now I would never eat that crap..
Crap because it's comida made without any love, the ingredients are all wrong, and God only knows who is making the food....

So on Long Island, there was a great Colombian restaurant...now it's crap too...
I found one in Suffolk county, and refuse to share its location....

All the othera on Long Island I feel are just about making their quick buck, but I have noticed that many gringos go, and Latinos who really don't know what Colombian food is about.

Great thread. I caught this late.

Hey, Queens, through Roosevelt Ave, was my stumping grounds. Clearly, it's not the same as during the late 1960s, 1970s and 80s. At one time one can arguably say that it was "Little Colombia". Not now. MItchAlvarez gave the best reasons where Colombians migrated. What you see on Roosevelt Avenue are just remnants of a once vibrant Colombian enclave.
